Sea Kayaking in the Outer Hebrides - Potential Itinerary

This will be a sea kayaking journey through the Outer Hebrides without a fixed itinerary, allowing us to take advantages of the current weather and sea conditions and to choose our route accordingly. However, the itinerary below gives an indication of the type of trip you will experience.

Day One – Travel from Inverness to the Outer Hebrides

Our journey to the Outer Hebrides traverses some of Scotland’s finest mountain scenery, then crosses the Minch by ferry with possible sighting of seals, porpoises, dolphins and whales. Once on the Outer Hebrides, we’ll head to our first campsite, perhaps near Bhaltos on Lewis or possibly at the beach of Luskentyre on Harris – both locations offer white sand beaches and great sea-kayaking from the shore. With daylight on the islands lasting almost until midnight in June, we’ll enjoy an evening paddle before settling down for the night to the sound of the surf.

Day Two – Sea Kayaking in the Outer Hebrides

Our sea kayaking expedition begins today with many options possible. Whether on Harris or Lewis, we’ll follow the coastline, passing small sandy coves, rocky headlands and stopping at small uninhabited islands along the way. Late afternoon, we’ll find a campsite in a remote location and then enjoy the tranquility of these islands and the wonderfully long daylight hours.

Days Three and Four – Sea Kayaking in the Outer Hebrides

Continuing our sea kayak journey, we will explore the coastlines, keeping our eyes open for sightings of dolphins, porpoises and whales, which are all frequently seen in these waters. On land, the wild flowers will be at their best, which means that we’ll be able to find an idyllic place to camp.

Day Five - Sea Kayaking in the Outer Hebrides

On our last full day of sea kayaking, we will be able to venture explore some of the wildest coasts of the Outer Hebrides. Marine wildlife and birdlife abounds in these remote areas and we can explore some of the many tiny islands along the coastline. We will find a place to camp close to our original start point, leaving just a short paddle back to base the next morning.

Day Six - Sea Kayaking in the Outer Hebrides

A short paddle back to where our vehicle brings an end to the expedition. We then unload the kayaks and return to Stornoway, where the ferry takes us back to the mainland. The crossing provides an opportunity to reflect on the expedition and the unique experience of sea kayaking in the Outer Hebrides. A short transfer takes us back to Inverness, arriving late afternoon

PLEASE NOTE - This itinerary is deliberately vague so that our guide, who knows the islands well, can choose the best route in light of the weather and sea conditions. The itinerary may be subject to change at the discretion of the Wilderness Scotland Guide having regard to weather conditions and other factors.
