HELP & ADVICE

Mountain Biking

GRADING - Mountain Biking

Grade - green

The following information gives an outline of how we grade our Mountain Biking trips. For more specific information please check out the Trip Dossier for the relevant trip. If you have any doubts about your suitability for a trip please get in touch, we'll be happy to advise you.

Our Green grade mountain biking trips are suitable for people new to mountain biking or with limited experience. The itineraries are designed to be active yet laid back with plenty of opportunity for instruction, sightseeing and relaxation.

You can expect around 3-4 hours of riding each day through mostly flat and undulating terrain. Distances covered will typically be in the range of 20km-35km each day.

Trail conditions will generally be straightforward with quiet minor roads, forest trails and easy sections of fun singletrack.

Before joining trips in this grade, the questions you should be asking yourself are:

  1. Are you generally active and enjoy riding a bike?
  2. Are you up for a challenge, learning a new skill and having a lot of fun?

Grade - blue

Our Blue grade mountain biking trips are suitable for people with some previous experience of mountain biking. You can expect around six hours of riding each day through undulating and, at times, mountainous terrain. Distances covered will typically be in the range of 40km-60km each day with the occasional longer day required due to trip logistics.

Trail conditions will vary from tarmac minor roads to double track land-rover type trails and sections of singletrack riding. Some of the singletrack may be technical in places.

Before joining this trip, the questions you should be asking yourself are:

  1. Are you happy being on your bike for around six hours each day for up to 6 days in a row?
  2. Do you regularly ride a bike most weeks, either on road of off road?
  3. Are you happy riding blue and easier red standard trails that you will find at most mountain bike centres?

Our trips at this grade include the epic Hebridean Trail, which journeys south to north through the Outer Hebrides - an awesome off-road journey through amazing scenery that few other mountain bikers have discovered.

We can also offer private, bespoke, trips at this grade for groups of four or more clients. For a sample itinerary, click here

Grade - red

Our Red grade mountain biking trips are designed for regular mountain bikers with a good level of fitness and technical riding skills. You may need to include some pre-trip preparation to build your stamina to cope with being in the saddle for consecutive days. You can expect around 6-8 hours of riding each day through a wide variety of terrain. Distances covered will typically be in the range of 50km-70km each day and you can expect to be some wild mountain environments where weather is a factor.

Trail conditions will vary from easy fire road trails to rocky land rover tracks and technical singletrack. The hardest trips in this grade will challenge even the most skilled rider with rock gardens, drop-offs and steep, rooty ascents and descents.

Before joining this trip, the questions you should be asking yourself are:

  1. Are you happy being on your bike for between 6-8 hours each day for up to 6 days in a row?
  2. Do you ride your mountain bike most weekends during the summer and do the occasional longer trip?
  3. Are you happy riding all red and easier black trails that you will find at most mountain bike centres?
