    Mini Bio

I have been lucky in life, being able to spend the whole working element of it as a practitioner in the outdoors. Spending time in some amazing places with fantastic people, doing a job that I love. My passion for the outdoors and adventure grew from a desire to escape the dreary life of a South Yorkshire mining town and the prospect of a life hewing coal 600m underground for a living. Discovering the moors and crags of the South Pennines was the catalyst for this narrow escape.

From the humble beginnings of the South Pennines, I have travelled, lived, worked, climbed, hiked, run, cycled, canoed, skied, surfed and partied across the globe. I am now more settled, living on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, and still trying my best to continue climbing, hiking, canoeing and cycling, although I admit my partying days are over!

    Place to Play

When the weather is good there is nowhere better to play than Western Scotland or Northern England. Although I also have a soft spot for Yosemite and Northern California.

Not a lot of people know this

As a teenager, I started playing rugby and one of my teammates was a movie star!

    Experience Read More

After graduating with a degree in Outdoor Activities I worked for Outward Bound Ullswater in the English Lake District for three years.

From there I was ‘headhunted’ to go work for Hurricane Island Outward Bound School (HIOBS) in Maine USA. Working on the ‘Problem Populations’ programmes in Maine, New Hampshire and Florida.

After 18 months spent working and travelling in New Zealand, Australia, South East Asia, India and Nepal I arrived back in the UK and built a career working in Further and Higher education delivering vocational outdoor courses to young people who also wished to build a career in the outdoors. After 24 years, three educational establishments and two head of department roles, I took voluntary redundancy and became self-employed working and a Free-Lance outdoor instructor.

I now deliver outdoor activity programmes to young people, students, disability groups and corporate clients year-round throughout the UK.

    Biggest Adventure Read More

I have had many big adventures and several misadventures!! But the adventure which is always first to mind is my training and attempt at completing the Bob Graham round, a challenge of a circuit around 42 Lake District peaks covering approximately 70 miles, climbing 28,000 feet and descending 28,000 feet in less than 24 hours. In winter.

The adventure came through going into the mountains to train, often alone and running for 10-14 hours, in blizzards, avalanche conditions, temperatures of minus 20 Celsius, storm force winds, much of the time in the dark.

The ability to endure and enjoy the challenge the conditions brought as well as navigate accurately gave me more satisfaction than the round itself.

    Read about it here.

I can talk passionately on a great number of subjects, history, music, geography, fauna, UK fell running, mountains of the UK, without knowing much about any of them.

    Adventurer's Stories about Iain

Ian was amazing. He made sure to connect with everyone in the group. He always asked the group each day’s hike. He cared about everyone’s well being

Iain was honest enough to say that this was his first trip with WS and I did have to give him directions a couple of times when we got slightly disorientated as I spent a large part of my childhood in the Cairngorms and known the roads well. However, I'm sure that local knowledge will come over time as he take more tours. We had a good laugh about it and it didn't spoil the trip in any way.

One thing that was really appreciated was on our last day in Braemar when we went off-piste compared to the itinerary and spent the morning at the Highland Games Information Centre. This gave everyone on the tour the chance to look around and find out more about highlands games and how they fit into the local culture. A big thanks to Iain for facilitating that.

    Make Trip Private

Sometimes it's nice to get family and friends together and travel privately for some quality time. This means you benefit from all the features of the group departure, including hand-picked accommodation and expert local guides and we'll take care of it all. Then you can make your choice of departures dates and we'll get back to you to finalise the details.

We work together with our team of guides to decide which departures they lead each year. As part of that, guides provide available dates that they are free to be booked. This means that any of the dates you see in the first field of the form below, could be perfect for your private departure or customised tour.
