    Mini Bio

I’m an enthusiastic hill-walker, mountaineer and naturalist, first introduced to the hills at age 5 by my father and to the wonders of nature by my mother even earlier!

After a career in mountain environment conservation, latterly as Senior Conservationist for the John Muir Trust, I now have a few jobs, including as Wilderness Scotland guide! In winter I undertake work as an Avalanche Forecaster for the Sportscotland Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) and guide winter hill walking skills courses. During the rest of the year, I guide walking holidays in Scotland, as well as some abroad. I also run mountain environment courses and carry out upland plant surveys.

In my view, one of the great things about being in hill, mountain, coastal and other wild environments is experiencing their tremendous and ever-changing variety: scenery, habitats, wildlife, weather – even the people!

    Place to Play

The Cairngorms. Such a diversity of landscapes, coires & crags, habitats, wildlife and weather.

Keith did a great job explaining in detail the botany and wildlife and ecology of the areas that we walked in. He also planned our routes to take advantage of the great weather and give us a range of terrain to experience 9and some extra Munro tops!). It was great to have Struan with us too, as he made a couple of routes possible for us by running or cycling ahead to fetch the van, so we didn't have to do the last hard miles on tarmac. It was nice to see Keith and Struan being inventive like this to make the trip better for everyone, and it was really appreciated.

Both Keith and Graham were excellent guides. Both very knowledgeable about the places we visited as well as Scotland itself, its wildlife and its history. Each day all of the group were included, no one was left out or behind if they had stopped to take photographs etc. There was a good mixture of seriousness, and explanations as well as friendly banter and teasing, which made an excellent atmosphere. We were given options as well during the trip, of places we could visit and see and we were asked if there was anything, in particular, we wanted to see /do then they would try to fit this in. Travel transfers with ferries and hire cars were smooth and well planned, walks were challenging enough and well planned and if there was a change in weather there were other options planned out for the group. Overall the two leaders Keith and Graham were excellent and I would like to pass on again my thanks for a truly wonderful trip, one I will remember for a very long time to come, I really really enjoyed my holiday time with them and the group.

Keith Miller was the ultimate guide. His thorough knowledge of the flora, fauna, terrain, history, and land management issues of each place we visited is truly outstanding. We hike independently in the U.S. and take many self-guided trips abroad; but this trip would have been very difficult and much less enjoyable without a guide of his caliber. This trip is an outstanding value. For those of us used to hiking in national parks in the U.S., the British trail systems appear very difficult to navigate with so many private property access restrictions and the general absence of signs. Mr. Miller was always well prepared with weather forecasts, multiple maps, and an unerring sense of where to go and what we might experience. He was also very flexible and tailored the itinerary to the weather and our interests -- immediately identifying birds by their song and plants by both their Latin and English names en route. He even provided us a complete list of these at the end of the trip. Outstanding is the only word to describe his knowledge, experience and expertise as a guide!

Warning, I am an enthusiastic American! Keith Miller made the trip special. Keith balanced 7 different personalities, approx. 30 year age difference between oldest and youngest member, we represented 4 different countries and were all at different levels of experience - he made us a cohesive group that got along great and had a fantastic time together on the walks.Through Keith we saw the life of Skye and Harris - we saw amazing hills/cliffs/beaches that we traversed, saw countless fascinating plants and more birds than I had hoped to see and learn about. I had a sense of awe every day of the trip, I appreciated that he encouraged Ruth and I to look at and discuss new plants/birds found and yet didn't let us lag too far behind on occasion or make us worried about being distracted. Finally, I got caught up with climbing up an amazing steep hill in Skye, it was exciting looking and seemed like a fun challenge. When I got to the top I realized that I actually have a slight un-comfort of heights and getting down would be the actual challenge. (I suggested I scoot down on my butt, but that was rejected...) Keith was great. He walked with me down the hill in such a way that I learned more about balance and footwork that I felt I had succeeded more than anything at the bottom.

Keith is the second Wilderness Scotland guide I've had - you choose your guides extremely well. Keith is a gem. His knowledge of the birds/plants/animals/ecology brings the area alive. He is kind and patient and any group that is led by will have a wonderful experience.

I would have liked him to be directive about sitting in different parts of the van so that everyone could get good views.
