    Mini Bio

Originally from Salisbury, Wiltshire I settled in the north of Scotland after completing a long and varied career in the Royal Air Force, the latter half spent in Scotland. As Aircrew, I was very fortunate to have been able to travel and explore a great deal across the globe particularly early on in my career. Now I prefer to do it by foot.

A keen Rugby player in my younger years I was a comparatively late starter to the outdoors. That moment came when I spent a weekend scrambling in Snowdonia in my late 20s. I was immediately hooked and since then I haven’t looked back. When I was later posted to Scotland I started to climb, walk and mountaineer in earnest, often organising and leading trips here and later overseas. I have also led many multi-week development expeditions for young people around the world and completed the Munros (Scottish mountains over 3000ft) in 2004. I hold a great passion for the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and love sharing it with people.

    Place to Play

I just love the Cairngorm plateau, particularly in winter. Alternatively, if it is a hot summer’s day the beach at Loch Avon takes some beating.

Not a lot of people know this

Prince William once made me a coffee and later took me mountain flying.

I have been leading groups in the UK hills and overseas in one form or another since 1990. In the mid-90s, I was a military Combat Survival Instructor for 4 years instructing fellow RAF Aircrew on how to survive, escape and evade in all environments. I got to know Dartmoor, Wales, the jungles of Brunei, the Mojave desert, West Virginia, Arctic Norway, Bavaria and the sea off Plymouth Sound all too well !

The early 2000s presented a shift when I started to support youngsters in achieving their Duke of Edinburgh Awards by becoming a volunteer D of E expedition supervisor for the local Council usually operating in the Cairngorm mountains. I also started to lead International expeditions mainly with young people in my spare time. These have taken me to the Indian Himalayas, Nepal, Borneo, Morocco, Ecuador, Iceland and the highest peaks in Eastern Africa. Highlights have included swimming with whale sharks and walking alongside a family of warthogs during a walking safari in Botswana and many more. These have been great experiences and have been a conduit to share experiences and passion for adventure and the great outdoors with young people. Similarly, working for Wilderness Scotland allows me to share the stunning dramatic scenery, landscapes and history that the Scottish Highlands and Islands offer. What I love doing is sharing those special moments with others.

It has to be Denali, Alaska where I have been fortunate to have been twice. On the last trip we reached the 17200 foot camp and were all set to go for the summit the following morning. Unfortunately when we woke up, one of our number was not well suffering from Altitude sickness so instead of going up we had to go down rapidly to the Basin camp at 14000’.

Once down safely at the camp and rested, we put our disappointment aside and had an impromptu jamming session miming to Guns and Roses classics from someone’s walkman and playing with musical instruments cut out of ice. Quite probably never been seen at that camp before or after. Big lows and highs all on the same day.

If you have any difficulty in sleeping, I am very knowledgeable on the Geophysical factors affecting sound propagation and losses in the Ocean.

On the hill, I have a keen interest in the environment, geology, history, wildlife and bushcraft. Off the hill, the best coffee shops and whether to have the cheesecake, Victoria sponge or flapjack to go with it.

    Adventurer's Stories about Martin

Martin was a font of knowledge and had a good sense for the hiking fitness among each person in our group. The pace was kept at a moderate level with occasional stops for ducking behind the bushes since there are no restrooms other than the villages which are spread far apart.

Martin was an excellent guide. He was very knowledgable about the history and geology of the island as well as managing the group well to make sure quicker and slower walkers all managed to do the walks together. He was also good fun.

Martin was an outstanding tour leader. His knowledge of the walks and terrain was exceptional, and he was able to adapt the itinerary where needed. He was so knowledgeable about the history, geology and wildlife of the island too, and his passion and experience was clear. Martin was highly professional but a lot of fun at the same time.

Martin was a terrific guide and driver. He certainly knows the area extremely well and picked the appropriate hiking trails each day to maximize our experience while taking into consideration the Scottish weather. He was amiable and friendly and made me, in particular, feel part of the group since the hikes were a little more challenging for me. I owe him a huge thank you.

Martin was an excellent guide. He was attentive to all his clients. Demonstrate an ability to mold the program to his clients and the weather. Handled stress well...even the flat tire.

He was informative on geology and history.

I am very glad that he lined up an opportunity for us to meet with one of the Harris Tweed weavers. This experience will touch the lives of many people in my personal community at home.

Martin was an excellent guide, very friendly, attentive and wanting the group to get the best out of every day. This was made more challenging by the variable weather but he coped admirably. Made an inspired choice to book tickets for the late night boat trip to the Mousa broch. Took fully on board the wishes and interests of the group and very personable.

Martin - we enjoyed our time with you very much. You were the perfect combination of knowledge and stories - yet also seemed to know when we wanted to just wander and take things in in silence. You were very patient when we stopped every 30 sec for photos. We loved our lunches and the hot drinks you provided - just stay out of the bogs will you :)? We wouldn't hesitate to take another trek with you somewhere else in the world.
