I will recommend the West Highland Way, but doing it in one week is too demanding and has consequences.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:

Thanks for your feedback. The West Highland Way is a challenging hike, which is why we give it a grade of Blue 6 however it is not unusual to complete the hike in in 7 days. We always do recommend having a look at our trip grading videos to get an idea of what to expect and our team are always around to chat through the trip before hand. It sounds like you had a fantastic time over all and well done for completing the West Highland Way, what a fantastic achievement!

The shopping list of recommended items was a bit daunting, but I used my common sense and cut it back.

I cannot tell a lie: it was stretching the facilities to the limit to accomodate 12 of us on a boat the size of Eda Frandsen. In the event, the sailing and the company were so good that on balance it didn't spoil the holiday but one shower between 12 is not ideal. Our young chef did extremely well, but there were occasional lapses (undercooked potatoes; a couple of odd mains - sometimes rather bland flavours etc). However, it was perfectly OK and we were all adequately fed. No one would have been expecting haute cuisine - i just felt incredibly sorry for her cooking in that tiny space.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:

Thanks so much for your feedback. With any trip based on beautiful Eda you do have to sacrifice some personal space but hopefully any challenges of living on a yacht for a week are far outweighed by the overall experience. The layout of the yacht is described in the dossier but perhaps we can be clearer about the facilities available.
Your Guide
John Ormiston was impeccable. Always courteous, good-humoured and very well-informed.
The Bottom Line
I would be careful with recommending the holiday to some of my friends (I am 71) because the enjoyment of the holiday depended very much on 'going with the flow' and previous long experience on family sailing holidays. I might try somewhere a bit warmer next time, but would not fault the professionalism of the crew or the safety of the boat. Just one shower between 12, that's pretty extreme...

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:

We’re so glad you enjoyed your time with us and had a memorable trip overall. I know you expressed an interest in joining our skipper James on another trip aboard Eda so hopefully we can welcome you to another trip in the future!

Unfortunately my biggest complaint was that the rating for this event was misleading. It was definitely not an 'Easy to Moderate' trail. And the picture of the happy family... mother, young daughter and son...on bikes on a bridge was extremely misleading. As I was pushing my heavy bike yet again up another steep ascent I kept trying to imagine the average 10 year old depicted on the brochures as being able to do this.
Recommendation: Who are you targeting for these vacations? If you wish to reach out to the average biker, middle age then this was not an Easy rated trip. Perhaps to a young, avid, daily mountain biker it might have been but I even challenge that. I would have rated this trip as Challenging, Difficult, Strenuous.... call it what it is.
On a positive note, the Rucksacks provided were very informative. But the trails weren't adequately marked and we couldn't find many of the sites depicted as interesting things to see along the way...

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
Each company has its own grading system and these vary. The relevance of these can be found when looking at the scale of that grading system and seeing how one grade compares to another, and what it entails. Our grading system can be found in the trip dossier and on our website. We also have a short video explaining what our grades mean, which you can view here - http://vimeo.com/76374479 While you may not have found the trip to be easy, the trip is 'easy' within our grading scale as described. In addition to this, our office team are always available to speak with you if you have questions about our grades.

All photos used on this the trip page are from the trip. Companies offering a similar itinerary generally offer this as a 3-day trip. We opted to offer it as a 5-day itinerary to make it easier, more enjoyable and family-friendly.
Trip Comments
The best biking stretch of this trip was along the Canal (on the third day) that lead into Fort Augustus I had originally thought that the entire bike trip would be like this one stretch.

The worst stretch was the fourth day. I walked my bike the entire time.
Recommendation: Is there any way to have an option for those who would perhaps like to skip this day and instead take a boat ride to this next point?

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We would be happy to customise this trip on request. Additionally, our office team are always available if you need assistance during your trip.
Accommodation and Food
All of the B&B's chosen were EXCELLENT I would recommend every one of them for future bookings. My favorite was the Glen Albyn run by Dennis and Helen.

However... I rate this section overall Average because....
The challenge for us on several days was lunch. It was a bit confusing as to what was or was not really available as lunch opportunities, especially the last couple of days. Wilderness Scotland needs to figure out more specific lunch options for each day and articulate them better.
Your Guide
We got lost several times. Certain terms were confusing such as 'single track'...which seemed to refer to a bike trail as well as a paved road with cars being able to travel one way only...

TEAM WILDERNESS REPONSE:
We haven't had any issues with other groups having difficulty finding the route. However, sometimes parts of the route need to change at short notice due to, for example, forestry work. We are always happy to receive advice if you feel particular sections of the route notes require updating.
The Bottom Line
I loved Scotland. The scenery was beautiful and the people so helpful and friendly.
I'm proud of myself that I completed the entire trail even though it was more a 'hike the bike' experience for me than a biking experience.
Recommendation: 1) Rate this trip as Difficult or Strenuous
2) Don't depict young children and mothers on your brochure. It is misleading. Show a young guy on a bike going up a steep ascent. That's more realistic.
3) Provide more lunch options.
4) Make your route notes more clear.
5) Provide options for those who may wish to 'opt out' of a day or two of biking. Perhaps a boat ride instead to the next point.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We're glad that you completed the trail and felt a sense of achievement as a result. As mentioned above, grades are only relevant when looked at as part of a scale. Easy trips can and do provide a challenging but fun objective to those with limited experience of mountain biking.

Accommodation and Food
Very disappointed in accommodation, Wilderness Scotland you have let yourselves down, these are not budget trips so why budget accommodation, either take £200 off the price or up your game, not sure I'll be back. I've been on a trip before and dinner included and accommodation was excellent, but you seem to have increased your margin and cut the experience.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
The feedback on the first accommodation in Plockton was a surprise as we work with them a lot and comments from our other guests is generally very good. With regards to the accommodation in Ullapool, our preferred partner closed this year as they are doing major renovations but we will be back working with them next year. Good quality accommodation for groups in Ullapool is surprisingly hard to find and we felt that the alternative accommodation used was the best option available. In terms of price, it is comparable to our first choice in Ullapool.

With regards to evening meals not being included, this varies from trip to trip and is clearly stated in the trip dossier. None of our sea kayak trail trips include evening meals.

All of our sea kayaking trips are priced using the same methods and margins as our other trips so are not any more expensive than our other trips.

It is very rare for us to receive feedback suggesting our trips do not offer value for money. When taking into account the high quality of our guides, equipment, vehicles, accommodation and other trip costs we believe the prices to be very competitive.

Chilled out and fun.
