This trip was amazing from start to finish. It's hard to believe how much ground we covered! Definitely the physical challenge of this trip was one of my favorite parts - some really fantastic climbing days rewarded with swishing descents. I just loved cycling the Irish coast, and the Yorkshire Dales, and well... all of it. At the same time the trip felt long and also over too quickly. I can't wait to have another crack at it.
Accommodation and Food
Standout accommodations included Oswestry, Rathmullan house, Sweeney Hall, and Mabie house. Beautiful country manors, quaint guest houses, funky old hotels. Arriving at each hotel was like opening the next box on an advent calendar.
Your Guide
Is there something better than excellent? I have run out of words for telling Simon and Will how good they are as guides. I hope they know how much our group truly appreciates them and all their hard work. They are the benchmark that all professional guides should aspire to. It was their first time on this itinerary and we honestly couldn't even tell. Not even 60mph, falling trees and a bonafide hurricaine threw them - they just quietly made a plan B and it was amazing. They are delightful, thoughtful, intelligent gentlemen and we would be so lucky to travel with them again.
The Bottom Line
This has quickly risen to the top of my short list of trips I must do again (along with the Outer Hebrides!). Beautiful scenery, great undulating rides, wonderful accommodations. Highly recommend!

The only accommodation that was a little sub par was In Dublin. In a city of that size I think you could do better.

Simon and Will are simply the best guides we have ever experienced and we have cycled all over the world.

Easy to pay for trip. Jane was friendly and professional.
Trip Comments
Will and Simon are great fun to be around, plus they’re attentive, flexible and know their bikes so can fix any problem. The trip was really well organised, accommodation lovely, bike route extraordinarily beautiful and group dynamic reallly comfortable.

There are so many highlights - I had such an endorphin fix being out in nature, clearing my mind, riding through the magnificent scenery. Quiet leafy back lanes were equally as beautiful to ride as the spectacular Yorkshire Dales and hillsides of Northern Ireland.
Accommodation and Food
I was really fortunate to have a room on my own due to the smaller group - thank you. Most rooms were lovely with great showers/baths. I also loved the variety (pubs/hotels/homesteads etc). They give us insight into the local community/history/culture.
Your Guide
Will and Simon are very special to our group. They are part of it, not just our guides but also our friends. Only warm thoughts, big smiles and huge thanks from me.
The Bottom Line
The trip was physically and at times emotionally challenging (the boat crossing on a slightly wild-weather day) but well worth the journey. I loved (almost) every minute of it!

Pre-Trip Service
It was a welcome surprise to have a call some weeks before the trip to check as to whether we had any concerns.
Trip Comments
The camaraderie of our group members and our guides Will and Simon, was a real bonus.

Despite the trip grading of '6', I felt that I was always going to manage this cycle, thanks to the level of support from our guides.

The view of the Irish Sea at the top of a challenging hill climb in Wales, was awe-inspiring.
Accommodation and Food
The only disappointing accommodation was in Dublin-the room was probably the most cramped we've ever stayed in. The second case had to be put in the way of our access to the even tinier bathroom.

The guides were unaware of this situation, due to Paul not wanting to appear difficult.

The lady on duty on arrival, didn't seem to be expecting us. She wasn't in control of the checking in process, but strangely didn't seem to be worried about it either!

The best accommodation-a true delight- was in Rathmullan Ireland. Very tight ship and comfortable amenities. This place is loved.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:

Thanks for your feedback, although we are sorry that you found your room at the hotel in Dublin to be a bit cramped. We haven't received feedback of this nature before, but you may be interested to know that for various operational reasons, we have changed the hotel that we use in Dublin for 2019.

We would like to assure you that our reservations are made many months in advance, and then are reconfirmed one month prior to the group's arrival to ensure everything is in order. Having reviewed correspondence, we can confirm that all was booked correctly with this hotel, so we are unsure as to why they didn't seem to be expecting you.

Hope to be able to welcome you back to Scotland or Ireland again in the near future.
Your Guide
Simon and Will could not have done more for us- they thought of everything. When they found out about our Dublin room days later, they were horrified that we hadn't said anything.

They not only looked after us, they gave us confidence that we could achieve the demands of the trip, and were good company throughout.
The Bottom Line
We are very proud of our achievements on the 5 Countries cycle.

I would say however, that the trip grading should have been looked at more carefully (by me that is), as some of the ascents and descents are, in my opinion, more than a '6'.

In future, I wouldn't consider a grading over 5, unless I'm doing more cycling.

30 miles per day would probably be my maximum, rather than some 50-60 mile days.

Trip Comments
It's difficult to narrow down the highlights because there were so many of them. The scenery was spectacular. Each location we stayed at was unique and charming.
Accommodation and Food
Each place was comfortable, clean and welcoming. I particularly liked Sweeney Hall, Rathmullan House Hotel and Mabie House. Gorgeous!
Your Guide
I have never been on a tour with two better guides than Will and Simon. Their thoughtfulness, tirelessness and attention to detail is extraordinary.
The Bottom Line
This was my third trip with Wilderness Scotland. We are already in the process of planning trips four and five for 2019 and 2020. At some point, I would like to do this particular trip again.

I appreciated Dave ringing head office to arrange an en suite with a bath instead of a shower, 2 days in I realised I needed to soak at the end of the day!

Great support, clear breakdown of the route the night before was very worthwhile and when one route was closed the guides sorted another route seamlessly for us clients! It actually worked out better - well done guys!

All you have to think about is cycling! Everything else is taken care of wonderfully! This is our 2nd cycling trip. Thank you to all the wilderness team.

I booked through CycleWest Ireland so my experience was a little different but I would have liked to know which hotels we were staying at. I did appreciate getting the guide info and as it turned out, having the office and guide phone number turned out to be very helpful.
Trip Comments
I have a bit of a type A personality and find it difficult to give up control so I really appreciated the night before info meeting letting us know the route we were taking and likely stop locations. Both Will and Dave were excellent day of the ride providing information about how busy the road was expected to be, where the climbs were and where they would be located so we didn't miss any turns. And most importantly, how long until the next snack location
Accommodation and Food
I appreciate that the Outer Hebrides do not have a great deal of choice in accommodations but all hotels and guest houses were excellent and well situated.
Your Guide
Both Will and Dave were excellent. They were both so enthusiastic about the area and about riding in general. They had a genuine desire to share this part of the world with others. I had my luggage mia for the first 4 days of the trip and though he says he didn't do much, Will was in contact with the office for me constantly (who were in contact with the airline) and keeping me up to date with progress. It really helped keep my stress levels in check.
The Bottom Line
I have done cycling trips with other companies but never in Scotland and this was my first experience with Wilderness Scotland. I was thoroughly impressed with both their professionalism and organization of the trip day to day; not to mention the kindness and genuine-ness of the guides. I would definitely recommend Wilderness Scotland to my friends and am already considering another trip in the future.
