      Trip Details

      This epic fully guided epic will take you to some of the most beautiful and remote areas of Scotland including Argyll, Skye, the Outer Hebrides and Orkney, culminating in a magical summer solstice pagan celebration with a night of music, poetry and readings at the Ring of Brodgar.

      This ancient henge and stone circle on the Orkney Isles dating back to Neolithic times is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – a truly special place to spend the longest day of summer.

      This adventure takes in some of the most iconic landscapes, amazing wildlife, pristine sandy beaches and historic sites.

      Perfect for anyone who would like to learn more about the rich history and culture of this fascinating country, the trip includes many important sites such as Kilmarten Glen, Gearranan Black House Village, Callanish Standing Stones, the Ring of Brodgar and Skara Brae.

      You will be joined by a Wilderness Scotland guide throughout who will bring the wonderful areas you’ll visit to life with their expert knowledge of Scotland’s culture, landscapes and wildlife. We also have the option to take road bikes along with us meaning we can do a mixture of hikes and cycling giving us a huge amount of flexibility and variety.

      This adventure can take place anytime between April and October, but to experience the summer solstice the trip must be taken on specific dates in June.

      Day by Day Itinerary

      Day 1 – Meet in Edinburgh or Glasgow

      Your Wilderness Scotland Guide will pick you up at either Glasgow or Edinburgh Airport.  Transfer west to Argyll on the west coast, our base for the next 2 nights.

      Day 2 – Explore Kilmartin Glen

      Today we can explore the historic landscape of Kilmartin Glen, astonishingly there are over 350 ancient monuments within 6 miles of Kilmartin Village, many of them dating back to prehistoric times.

      Day 3 – Ferry to Kerrera & Glen Coe Exploring

      We will take the very short ferry trip to the tiny island of Kerrera where we can hike around the island and visit the ruins of Gylen Castle. In the afternoon we head north to Glen Coe where after settling into our accommodation, we will be joined by a local storyteller who will bring the bloody history of Glen Coe to life with tales of the infamous MacDonald clan and the Glen Coe Massacre.

      Day 4 – Exploring Glen Coe

      Glen Coe has a great variety of low-level hiking through dramatic glens and high-level mountain ridges – your guide will gauge the interests and experience of the group to choose a hiking route that everyone will enjoy.

      Day 5 – Travel to Skye

      Continuing our journey north we will now head to the beautifully mystical island of Skye. On the way we will stop at the iconic Eilean Donan Castle before continuing on to our luxury bed and breakfast. On arrival on Skye we may enjoy a short coastal hike in the evening to take in our new surroundings.

      Day 6 – Skye Hiking

      Today we will embark on a hike in Skye’s iconic landscapes relishing the views from the crumpled ridge of the Quiraing or the Old Man of Storr rock pinnacle looking out to Raasay, Rona and the Torridon mountains on the mainland.

      Day 7 – Travel to Harris in the Outer Hebrides

      Driving north up the Trotternish peninsula we will take the ferry from Uig on Skye over to Harris in the Outer Hebrides with the option of an afternoon bike ride or hike on this beautiful island.

      Day 8 – Discover West Harris

      West Harris has some of the most glorious, unspoilt, white-sand beaches in Scotland and today we will discover this idyllic area on our bikes.

      Day 9 – North to Lewis

      Transferring north to Lewis we will visit Great Bernera, here at Bosta beach we can enter a reconstructed Iron Age house and hike part of the beautifully rugged Great Bernera coastal path.

      Day 10 – Biking in West Lewis

      We’ll take to our bikes while exploring the highlights of West Lewis, visiting places of historical interest such as the Callanish Standing Stones, Dun Carloway Broch and Gearranan Black House village with your guide as a support driver.

      Day 11 – Travel back to the Mainland

      Departing Stornoway by ferry we will arrive at Ullapool back on the mainland, if time allows we can enjoy an afternoon hike on Ullapool Hill.

      Day 12 – Ferry to the Orkney Islands

      Travelling to the north coast of the mainland we will take the ferry to the Orkney Islands, the small town of Kirkwall will be the base of the next few days.

      Day 13 – Visit Sea Bird colonies and explore Skara Brae

      From Brough Head a superb walk follows the coast to Marwick Head which is home to one of the largest sea bird colonies in the Northern Isles.  Afterwards we will visit the Stone Age village of Skara Brae.

      Day 14 – Ring of Brodgar

      After a relaxed morning we can hike a coastal path from Stromness to the Ness.  In the evening we can join in with the Summer Solstice celebrations at Ring of Brodgar Stone Circle where there will be music, poetry and readings.

      Day 15 – Private Boat Journey

      Due to a late night we will take a wildlife spotting private boat trip in the afternoon to visit some sea cliffs, seal colonies and possibly the odd basking shark or whale!

      Day 16 – Depart Orkney and Travel to Inverness

      Departing Orkney we will take the ferry back to the mainland and your guide will transfer you to Inverness to make your onward connections.

      You will be met off your flight by your guide at Edinburgh or Glasgow Airport on Day 1 of the trip. For the purposes of this sample itinerary we will return to Inverness on Day 16 but this is entirely flexible.
