Red Graded Mountain Biking Holidays 7-9

Our Red grade mountain biking trips are designed for regular mountain bikers with a good level of fitness and technical riding skills. You may need to include some pre-trip preparation to build your stamina to cope with being in the saddle for consecutive days. You can expect around 6-8 hours of riding each day through a wide variety of terrain. Distances covered will typically be in the range of 50km-70km each day and you can expect to be some wild mountain environments where weather is a factor.

Trail conditions will vary from easy fire road trails to rocky land rover tracks and technical singletrack. The singletrack will often be technical. The hardest trips in this grade will challenge even the most skilled rider with rock gardens, drop offs and steep rooty ascents and descents.

Before joining this trip, the questions you should be asking yourself are:

Are you happy being on your bike for between 6-8 hours each day for up to 6 days in a row?
Do you ride your mountain bike most weekends during the summer and do the occasional longer trip?
Are you happy riding all red and easier black trails that you will find at most mountain bike centres?

Accommodation

An inherently mobile itinerary, this trip will allow us to a range of high quality accommodation in the regions that we pass through.

Single Room Supplement

We do not charge single person supplements to people booking on their own. However you will be expected to share a room with another person of the same sex. It may be possible to book a single room, provided one is available. Please request this at the time of booking and we will let you know if one is available. For this trip, a supplement of £250 is charged if a single room is required.

Customer Kudos

Every client receives a feedback survey when they return from their guided, self guided or tailor made holiday with us.

Once completed the review is published on our website just as soon as our database updates. The little touches and details are important to us and where issues are raised we make positive changes to our trips to improve your experience.

That's why we read each of our client's reviews and although we don't respond to all of them, if it's glowing feedback then we get the satisfaction of helping to make your holidays truly memorable.

Very informative home page and easy to get in touch with the staff. I had a problem to get my final payment thru.
Trip Comments
Fantastic environment, hard working guides, cosy lodgings and a mix of challenges. On the negative side is the quality of the rented bikes which often delayed the departure in mornings so we were late in the evenings which gave us little time to recover for the next day.

Team Wilderness Response:
Sorry to hear that you had some technical issues with the bikes. The C2C trip is a demanding trip on the bikes, so it essential that the bikes are checked over each day, this should be done in the evenings, so to allow for prompt starts.

One of the guides were a bit to eager to keep a high speed from start and gave us no chance to warm up.

Only suggestion is the recommendation for 15-30L backpack was misleading. I carried a 24L, which was much more than I needed and more than everyone else. Perhaps clarify that the van will meet you for lunch each day.
Trip Comments
Accommodation and Food
Lunch was great and appreciated the guides continually offering us as much food as we wanted. In a large group, one can feel guilty eating/drinking too much if there is concern that others may not get enough.
Your Guide
Both Paul and Malcolm were great. It did seem that they were a little stressed at the start since we got a late start on day 1. Suggest they acknowledge that we are getting a late start and describe how late we are, but then put extra effort into getting everyone pumped about the trip.
The Bottom Line
The aberdeen to Inverness trip is very special. Scotland has a unique set of attributes in that it is both very rural/majestic yet comfortable. I love the mix of what feels like remote country during the day and small town B&B at night. Support van was great.

I realize pasta is not normal fare for Scottish restaurants, but given how long/hard we ride everyday, I would have loved to have a carb rich pasta dish on the menu each night. The lasagna options didn't have much pasta in them.

Most were excellent apart from the first place in Ballater - far too hot and the breakfast service was slow.

Malcolm and Paul were fantastic guides. Paul was great at finding hidden singletrack and Malcolm knew so much about local wildlife and history.

WS is a first class operation all the way! I had been looking at this trip for several years before deciding to go for it, and it didn't disappoint in any way! Riding coast to coast in and of itself was very satisfying, and I can't imagine a better or more scenic route exists than the one Graham selected for us! We had a fantastic group and great weather, which made it all the more perfect!
Accommodation and Food
The guesthouses were all quaint, clean, comfortable and welcoming. The food provided for tea and lunch greatly exceeded my expectations! The incredible Lucy always surprised us with wonderful treats each day. Lunch was always fresh and interesting. Coffee and tea were always hot and very welcome! Dinner with our group each night at the local pubs and restaurants was always enjoyable.
Your Guide
Graham and Lucy operated as a well oiled machine in every way and complimented each other very well! They both had the most amazing senses of humor and positive attitudes. Graham was clearly very experienced, with extensive local knowledge of the trails. He was encouraging and kept a great pace for the group. We felt like we could slow down and soak up the spectacular scenery or take photos at any time, and still ride hard and make good time on the trails. I would love to join another cycling trip with Graham in the future. Lucy, was absolutely amazing with her support on this trip. I already mentioned how wonderful the food was, but the other support was amazing too. All I had to do every day was wake up and ride, then leave my bike with the van at the end of the day, eat, sleep, repeat. Lucy took care of our luggage and made sure our bikes were clean and in good working order each day. Impeccable service from our guides!
The Bottom Line
Amazing trip. Exceeded my expectations in every way. We had great weather, breathtaking scenery, great guides and a challenging and rewarding ride! Spot on with the rating of 8 I would say. It was physically challenging, but in the best possible way! I'm only sad it's over!

Graham and Lucy very knowledgeable and relaxed. Really enjoyed riding with Graham and gleaning the local culture from our meals together with both guides. Both with great sense of humor!
Coffee Time always a good laugh!!

Loved the church B & B the most. Loved all the other B& B equally. Having supper together and a wee dram nightly at the B & B was fantastic.
Your Guide
Graham was fantastic in every way. Approachable, organized, helpful , mechanical, good rider, made the route seem unique to our group, funny.
Lucy was amazing. Lucy's kitchen kept us fed and catered to our quirks. Always prepared and a great complement to Graham ... worked really well as a team.
They made sure all we had to do was focus on riding and having fun as they handled the bikes and accommodations and logistics.
Can't imagine a better team.
The Bottom Line
My first excursion with Wilderness Scotland ... A HOME RUN.
Logistics were flawless, rental bikes were great, guides Graham and Lucy were a team that will be difficult to match.
The " mountain bike across Scotland" accurately rated as an 8 for difficulty. Hard and long but with the right support, the entire group made it. Few falls, sprains, bruises and near drownings (lol) but worth every hard day. The evenings were so much fun breaking bread with the guides and the locals at the B & B's.
If you decide to take on this challenge: be ready for average of 8 hours / day, be prepared to slow yourself down at times to make sure you get that photo that only comes along once in a lifetime, introduce yourself to everyone that looks your way, finish every night with a WEE DRAM for courage. Guaranteed you will walk away saying ... that was worth every $$ and bead of sweat put in! All the best and good luck ... Highland Stew out!

Knowledgeable, interesting, strong, professional, fun. They did a excellent job, I would recommend them for any future trip. They were there when you needed them, helped with the smallest details to big concerns of each day riding. (Tim Francis mapped one heck of a route through the mountains. I was cursing him several times over, jokingly.) I understand our pace each day but taking it slower in certain sections, taking more pictures would also work. Thank you so very much for showing us the beautiful landscapes and culture of Scotland!

Could not have been better in any way. The right amount of physical challenge, nature, and shared good company.
Accommodation and Food
The accommodations were pleasant. (I especially enjoyed the inn at Newtonmore, where the owners were extremely welcoming, the darling little dog Skye befriended us, and the fire outside greeted us.) I appreciated the uniqueness of each hotel or inn. Food: Always great, especially the lunches that were thoughtfully assembled by the guides to include such a delicious mix of the healthy and the indulgent.
Your Guide
If a handbook were to be written about good guiding, Will and Andy are the two to do so. I did not expect to have guides with such a deep love of the countryside, thorough and un-canned knowledge of ancient history, contemporary history, geography, all aspects of nature, and more. Their easy friendship, willingness to go the extra mile to accommodate the group's needs, and gentle senses of humor were appreciated. I will seek them out for future trips.
The Bottom Line
Immersion in nature, the right amount of cycling on an inventive route, something new every day, and lots of adventure: it's all included in the Coast to Coast trip. I can't think of anything that I would change or ask to have carried out differently. Maybe more poetry?

All pre-trip questions where quickly and accurately answered. The only disappointment (minor probably) was with the bike rental. I sent in what my bike preferences where and a little about my personal mountain bike setup and if it could be duplicated. Never heard a thing back. Not even an acknowledgement that my information was received. Thought this interesting seeing as all other pre-trip correspondence was well done.
Trip Comments
Had high expectations of this trip and they were far exceeded. The route was inventive, scenic, sometimes relaxing, sometimes challenging and a few times beyond my technical abilities as I expected. At the end of every day I thought how can this trip get better then this and I'll be damned if the next day wasn't even more fun and beautiful.
Accommodation and Food
Lunch was a highlight of every day. A cup of tea and a wide selection of great wholesome food. Outstanding.

Where did you find Will and Andy? Excellent in all aspects. Helpful but did not dote or patronize. Alway part of the group not separate and aloof. Will with a great knowledge of Scotland's geology and history and a willingness to share it. Loved the Scottish music he would play in the van. Andy always with a big smile and a good knowledge of the forestry, environmental practises, and local mountain biking scene. Became instant friends with us all.

The lady with whom I dealt was very pleasant on the phone and informative.
Trip Comments
The first back up guide that we had - George - was extremely knowledgeable about anything to do with the Highlands (history, geography, the actual route etc). Graham and Henry, our other guides, clearly tried very hard to make our journey as interesting and as varied as possible; nothing was too much trouble.
Accommodation and Food
Each of the bed and breakfasts were good and interesting in their own way. Importantly, we were able to wash/dry kit at each stop. The food was excellent throughout. The bed and breakfast at Spean Bridge was undoubtedly the best b&b that we stayed at for food, accommodation, everything. The food provided by the back-up driver was just what we needed; good and plenty of it.
Your Guide
George's knowledge was outstanding and informative. Graham chose good routes for us including on the 2nd day when we took an alternative (and better) route and was a very reassuring presence. Henry was a lovely guy who clearly was keen to do his utmost for us.

The staff in the office were really helpful, and those I spoke to really knew and understood the requirements of the coast to coast. They gave sensible and measured advice.
Trip Comments
Graham our guide was simply excellent. He had a very friendly approach, made everyone feel included, and was a fund of knowledge and experience. He was also empathetic and able to judge our capabilities well. The support guys Henry and George were also really good, and went beyond the basic call of duty to make sure we enjoyed the trip.
Accommodation and Food
Accommodation quite variable BUT that's half the fun, and certainly we took it in our stride. None of the accommodation fell below the higher end of 'acceptable'.
Food was really good throughout - George and Henry were imaginative in their buying, and the presentation was spot-on - even on very wet days.
Your Guide
Graham was brilliant (in an understated and slightly self-deprecating way). Massive trust in him from early on.
The Bottom Line
I had very high expectations of this off-road coast to coast trip, and the Wilderness Scotland team was able to surpass even those. It was a real achievement for me to make the crossing, and I quite simply could not - and would not - have done it without Graham, George and Henry and the experience, support and challenge that they brought. Epic.

After I paid my deposit, there is not a link to pay the rest of the fees. I spent quite a while trying to find where to pay until I figured out that you couldn't, and you have to call back. I'd wish you could pay through Paypal to avoid bank fees, block credit card and foreign exchange fees.
Trip Comments
The trip was well organized. Great places to ride and awesome guides. In a way, it was undersold because it is harder than presented. Not a complain, just an obsevation.
Accommodation and Food
Accomodations were great. The food for breakfast was good. The lunch buffets were delicious and excellent quality. There was more than you could eat.
Your Guide
Will Snow is the man! Super nice and knowledgeable of the area. Very helpful and always ready to get you whatever you needed. This is the kind of guide you want on every trip.
Kelty is an awesome guide as well. Sometimes I wish he was on the back of the group instead of the front. Some of the people were behind and you were always wondering if they were alright.
The Bottom Line
What an adventure! Great group and routes, awesome facilities and food. This side of Scotland is beautiful. Thanks Wilderness Scotland.

The pre-trip dossier was extremely helpful as a reminder of the type of equipment which might be required throughout the trip. Any requests for information from me were made with plenty of time, and all the messages which I sent were replied to quickly. All the information relating to the trip was easily accessible.
Trip Comments
The trip as a whole became such a fantastic adventure that it is now difficult to pick out particular parts. However, the fifth day riding between Fort William and Loch Shiel was a definite highlight. The combination of less than ideal weather conditions, spectacular views and at times very challenging terrain made for a quite unforgettable morning and afternoon!!
Accommodation and Food
I found all of the food and accommodation choices to be of a very high quality.
Your Guide
Both guides were extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the trip and the different areas which we visited. They were very personable and made the whole trip in to a great wild adventure.
The Bottom Line
The week was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. If you are after a true adventure taking in what would otherwise be largely inaccessible parts of the highlands then this trip is ideal. Wilderness Scotland certainly lived up to their name!!

Being able to easily jump on the phone with Rachel and other team members prior to the trip was extremely helpful. Our questions were answered, which enabled proper preparation and gear and provided for a comfortable state of mind going into the experience. Without being able to jump on the phone with someone, it is always difficult to discern what an adventure trip will be like (accomodations, schedule, weather, routine, etc.) from simply written materials.
Trip Comments
The trip was well planned and the guides were particularly knowledgable and enjoyable to be with. I thought Mark handled the group very well and both laid out and managed the days very well. Additionally, the accommodations were phenonemal and an x-factor in making the travel experience what it was.
Accommodation and Food
Having a hot meal, regardless of what it was, each night, was definitely something to look forward to after a long day of riding.
Your Guide
Mark had a firm grasp on everything from the beginning. His experience was evident and his ability to manage the various parties on the trip and the riding part, while also providing an enjoyable experience for all is very impressive.
The Bottom Line
The trip is something that becomes even more impressive and distinct in hindsight. I could not have been happier with the experience and is something that I would recommend to interested friends and something that will always stand out for what we did, the group and the overall organization (preplanned to execution)

The trip was fantastic fun and really enjoyable. However I think that the level of mountain biking skills needed was somewhat oversold. The actual amount of technical mountain biking was not as much as the trip indicated, with a lot of the ride of land rover tracks.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
Our coast to coast route does offer plenty of singletrack riding (broadly equivalent to blue and red trail standard with some black sections). I understand from Tim your guide on this trip that due to the exceptional flooding and high river levels many of these singletrack sections had to be by-passed which was a pity - particularly the section on Day 3 where you had to start the day's ride in Grantown.
Accommodation and Food
On the last 2 nights there was a mixup with accommodation and the group was split between 2 hotels. Me and another guy stayed in a B&B with super unfriendly owners. We arrived soaking wet after hours in the rain to be told to take all our wet gear off, and then told that the heaters wouldn't be turned on. It was a real turn off.

The other B&Bs were great - it was just this last 2 nights that were a real letdown. Firstly because it was located a 10 minute drive from the rest of the group, but mainly due to the fact the owners were horrible.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We have had some issues with our regular hotel in Strontian and had to take the difficult decision to stop working there mid-season.

There was no mixup with the accommodation on this trip but due to the very limited options in this area, we were forced to use two separate accommodations. We're sorry to hear about the attitude of the owners at the B&B and we will be taking this up with them.

For 2015 we're pleased to say that we have bookings made with a great new hotel for the final 2 nights of the trip.
Your Guide
The Bottom Line
Fantastic trip - though I'd not say that you need a full suspension bike for it, and it wasn't so challenging in terms of the technical mountain biking skills required.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We sincerely apologise for the problems encountered here. We’ve worked with the Ben View for a number of years. Unfortunately, due to a number of unexpected circumstances, the standards slipped beyond what we have previously experienced. We tried to support the hotel through these times however it has not worked out. The hotel became one of the weaker points of the trip and as such we now use an alternative accommodation.

Very good and knowledgeable.

Suggestion- we were all given a bit of bike repair kit to carry. This was strangely not enough to say, repair a puncture if you were on your own. It would have made more sense to give each person a puncture fix kit with a pump. Great holiday- not cheap though!

Would suggest that more emphasis be given to the priority kit for the C2C trip. The importance of having waterproof shorts/trousers got lost amongst the ambiguity of spare spokes, shock pumps etc - particularly when I was hiring the bike.
Trip Comments
Many high points. One low point was the loss of the nut on the rear axle of my hire bike a long way from the nearest road. It transpires the root cause is a known design fault with the Lappier Zesty which should have been addressed by the hire company on all bikes of this design. If it had not been for the sharp eyes of trainee guide Laura I would have had a long walk out from Loch Builg.

Accommodation and Food
The accommodations were great. I thought we'd be bunking in run down bunk houses. The Inns and the innkeepers were the best. Very friendly and they took care of our every need. Comfortable and clean. As for the food it, was excellent. As a food snob, I thought we'd be served gruel every night. We dined at some really good restaurants. The food was local and solid. I had a variety of meals and all of them were excellent. The daily lunch buffets were amazing. Ian would put together these terrific spreads of meats, cheeses, fruits, breads, sweets, coffee, soup for lunch. We swarmed in on it like locust. I had to learn some restraint, something Americans are not known for, or I'd over eat. :)
Your Guide
Simon is by far and away the best. I so enjoyed his company and enthusiasm for the ride. He was quick to point out the natural history as well as the general history of the areas. Very interesting and informative. He has a cool, calm demeanor and excellent leadership qualities. I am sure you have other guides that are very good but I can't see riding with anyone else. Scenery and varied terrain were excellent.

Carrying bike over mountain was tough but I guess was necessary to access remote trails. Early starts in morning were hard going but necessary to complete. Focus on crossing Scotland less important to me than quality of rides. So if I was to go again I would base in a couple of the places rather than pushing to complete mileage for crossing.

Food was excellent. Accomodation was homely but I guess was best available given remote locations. A spa or masseues after rides would have been worth extra cost to me if available.

Our group opted to take an alternate route to the trip's endpoint (the lighthouse). The beach we visited was absolutely worth the extra effort and turned out to be one of my favorite pieces of scenery of the journey.
Accommodation and Food
A few of the places could have been a bit cleaner (e.g. bathrooms). However, this is means little in my memory compared to the genuine and warm receptions we received from each of the proprietors. I had never stayed at a B&B prior to this trip and thought I preferred the anonymity of a hotel, but I really enjoyed the B&Bs, and they definitely enhanced the trip.

Tim and Dave.
Both very competent, well organised and dedicated. VG employees - keep them!
The only comment I would have is that Tim appeared a bit "blind" to the slower pace of some members of the group. i.e. when they caught up they were given no break and we were off again which may have had the effect of demoralising them.
The Bottom Line
Exceptionally well organised and supported. A quality overall product only slightly let down by the quality of the accommodation - but I fully appreciate that in a Coast to Coast the choice is very limited. Inspirational moment.. getting to the top of the hill before Strontian.

Trip Details

Our Coast to Coast mountain biking itinerary is an absolute epic and, without a doubt, one of our favourite trips. It features a week of superb riding from Aberdeen in the east to Ardnamurchan in the west.

Our pioneering route covers 350km, an awesome amount of ascent and descent and is the ultimate coast to coast mountain bike ride in the UK.

In the quest to make a great trip even better, we have made further improvements this year which mean more superb Highland trails and a higher standard of accommodation throughout the trip. The trails are as varied as the spectacular scenery of the Scottish Highlands and range from flowing singletrack to rocky and challenging mountain passes to mellow forest fire-road. Beginning in Aberdeen, we leave the city behind and ride all the way across the Highlands through the backcountry to the tip of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, the westernmost point of mainland Britain. This is a truly superb multi-day mountain bike ride offering world class riding through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Scottish Highlands.

Why choose the Wilderness Scotland Coast to Coast?
With many coast to coast itineraries out there, how do you know which one’s best? Through 20 years+ of experience, knowledge and passion, we believe our trip is the one to choose. Hopefully the following facts will help you make up your mind:

•    Our 350km route features some of the best trails in Scotland. We have made it our mission not just to get from A to B, but to ride the best trails along the way.
•    Over the years, we have ridden all the alternatives and know that the route we have devised offers the best riding, scenery and challenge. Unlike other routes, ours is genuinely coast to coast – right from the North Sea to the crashing surf of the Atlantic at Ardnamurchan Point.
•    We invest each year in finding the best accommodation and food partners for the trip based upon our detailed knowledge and experience of the region. No other company offers such a high standard of accommodation and food throughout the trip.
•    All of our guides are professionals from the Highlands and know the trails inside out. Riding with them, you can sure of discovering the best riding, learning a huge amount about Scotland, being safe, developing your skills and, for sure, having a lot of fun.

START POINT – Aberdeen

END POINT – Inverness

Our Coast to Coast mountain bike trip was voted one of the trips of the year in the US’ leading outdoor publication. Outside Magazine. You can read the recommendation here.

Cycling Journalist and writer Rob Penn also complete the Wilderness Scotland Coast to Coast. To read his account of his trip in The Guardian, click here.

Trip Itinerary

Day One – City of Aberdeen to Ballater

We meet in Aberdeen where we begin our bike journey west across Scotland. We ride through Royal Deeside, following the route of the old railway line built for Queen Victoria. After lunch we b continue to Dinnet, to ride some of the best-kept secret single-track on Deeside, through beautiful birch and pine forest around the Burn of Vat and Cambus o’ May. (L, D)

Distance 64km

Day Two – Lochnagar and Balmoral to Tomintoul, Via Glen Builg

A classic day, typical of riding in the Scottish Highlands. In the morning we leave Ballater behind, following the River Muick, rising slowly towards Lochnagar.  Climbing over the shoulder of the mountain, we then drop down to explore the trails around Balmoral Estate.  Lunch is taken at Invercauld, followed by a long steady climb into wild Scottish countryside and a real mountain experience. Overnight in Tomintoul, the highest village in the Highlands. (B, L)

Distance: 70km

Day Three – Through the Cairngorms

Arguably one of the best day rides in the UK, today’s route takes us through the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. Challenging hill climbs, beautiful ancient forests and sparkling lochs provide the backdrop to some of the country’s finest trails. Your guide will show you the way on this area’s hidden trails which link together to provide an unforgettable day in the mountains. Having traversed the National Park, our final is the village of Newtonmore. This is a classic and challenging day and one you are likely to remember for a long time. (B, L)

Distance 58km

Day Four – From the East to the West Highlands

From Newtonmore we continue our journey west, following an old military road before taking the backdoor into Laggan Wolftrax – one of Scotland’s best mtb trail centres. Some excellent downhill leads to morning coffee and a recharge before we head into a remote glacial valley which passes through the heart of the mountains. Double track combines with single track to leads us into the West Highlands. Overnight in Spean Bridge. (B, L)

Distance 64km

Day Five – Spean Bridge to Acharacle

The lower reaches of the Great Glen Way lead to Fort William where we take a short hop by boat across Loch Linnhe. Once ashore on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula we head south and then west to ride through one of the Highlands’ finest glens – remote, wild and dramatic. Our route leads to the shores of Loch Shiel and the historic village of Glenfinnan. The day ends in style when we are picked up by private boat for a journey down the loch to reach our overnight accommodation. (B, L)

Distance 45-60km

Day Six – Acharacle to Ardnamurchan Point

An awesome final day to finish. From Acharacle we head straight off-road into the Ardnamurchan wilderness. Heading west we join a beautiful coastline trail before climbing into the hills to reach one of the best and most challenging singletrack sections of the route. The views to Skye, the Small Isles and the Outer Hebrides are simply breathtaking on a clear day. After lunch we tackle the final short section of road and coastline singletrack to our final destination Ardnamurchan Point – the most westerly point on the UK mainland! A truly epic location to finish our journey. Celebratory dinner and drinks in Acharacle. (B, L, D)

Distance 45km

Day Seven – Return to Inverness

Following breakfast we load the vehicle and bikes and enjoy a leisurely 2 hour journey back to Inverness, arriving around lunchtime. (B)

Customer Kudos
It is an unbelievable adventure in a beautiful part of the world- the scenery at times feel as if one is in a story book surrounded by natural beauty. At times the cycling is challenging and once completed it is an achievement one can be proud of.
