Places to Eat on Harris, our Top 3

• Looking a bit like a cross between a Broch and a space-ship, this fantastic wee Harris café with its welcoming stove and lovely food is an absolute gem.
• Go for a wander on the white sand and salt-marsh landscape of Scarasta beach, climb to the summit of Ceapabhal for one of the best views in the Hebrides, or research your island ancestry at Seallam! and end your outing at the Temple café.
• If you time your visit right you might even hear an impromptu music session. Healthy lunches, great coffee and tasty cake in a cosy, friendly setting. Perfect.

• There is nothing frilly or superficial about the Bays Centre. This community run centre serves the local population with a range of facilities including a great café.
• Don’t expect posh nosh, but what you will get is a hot cuppa, good home made grub, and delicious cake served with a welcoming smile. It’s just off the northern end of the Golden Road, perfectly located for morning coffee as you begin an exploration of the moon-like landscape of eastern South Harris.
• Look out for the colony of Grey Seals that haul out on the rocks below the centre for a wildlife-watching opportunity with your brew!

• Waiting for the ferry to Uist? Or heading around Harris? This makes for a perfect stop. And it’s… a bus that sells butties!
• Parked up at the Pier in Leverburgh and converted into a small café, this is a welcome sight if you’re cycling through the islands as I was a few years ago, unaware of the gorgeous smell that would greet me as I rode off the north-bound ferry across the Sound of Harris… I couldn’t resist one of their mouth-wateringly good bacon rolls and delicious range of soups and chowders!
• Simple fare but in a stunning setting with views over the sound to Leverburgh make this a great place for a pause.
