Place to Play – Biking in the far north. Empty roads and wild trails
Not a lot of people know this – I was the first person from Scotland to complete the ‘Tour Divide’, a 2745-mile long mountain bike race from Canada to Mexico.
SMLTB Summer Mountain Leader, SMLTB Winter Mountain Leader, SMLBA Mountain Bike Leader, BASP Advanced First Aid, UKCC Sea Kayaking 3 Star, BCU Open Canoe 4 Star.
Mini Bio – I love Scotland’s wild places and cycling through them. When I’m not on my bike I also enjoy sea kayaking and hill walking. After over a decade of leading overseas expeditions to Asia, Africa and Latin America combined with teaching Geography I’ve become about as settled down as a tour guide can ever be, living in the Highlands, although still like to venture overseas. I guided a sensory impairment charity trek to Kilimanjaro in June 2014.
Working for Wilderness Scotland has given me an opportunity to share the outstanding natural beauty of a world-class destination. The landscape and culture is unsurpassed. If I had to choose a favourite trip it would be quite difficult as it’s always a privilege to experience any journey in our remote surroundings with amicable, like-minded people.
As well as working in Outdoor Education and the Leisure industry for many decades I have been a Teacher of Geography and led over 20 school expeditions abroad. I’m now a Senior Guide with Wilderness Scotland, mostly on cycle trips during the summer but continue to work as a Teacher with Special Educational Needs groups during the winter.
In 2011 I biked the ‘Tour Divide’, a 2750 mile race from Banff, Canada to the Mexican border along the USA Continental Divide. This was my biggest physical adventure. My most rewarding adventure was helping to guide a friend who was both deaf and visually impaired up to the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2014.
I have a degree in Environmental Geography and have recently developed a particular interest in Scottish History and Geology. My knowledge of flora and fauna is also improving every year. Every day I’m out with Wilderness Scotland is a school day.
Adventurer's Stories about Will
Both Will and Dave were excellent. They were both so enthusiastic about the area and about riding in general. They had a genuine desire to share this part of the world with others. I had my luggage mia for the first 4 days of the trip and though he says he didn't do much, Will was in contact with the office for me constantly (who were in contact with the airline) and keeping me up to date with progress. It really helped keep my stress levels in check.Cris Gray
Can't fault Dave or Will. They were excellent. Fun to be around, really helpful. They looked after the bikes so we had no problems with them. Brilliant!Fiona Roberts
Couldn't have been betterGeoffrey Allan
Guides make or break a trip. Everything else is secondary. Will and Dave were terrific- thoughtful, fun, attentive to everyone’s needs. They were running for 12+ hours a day with us- bikes, food, baggage, etc. but they kept their good humor throughout. When you come from far away, guides are your lifeline and these two made for a great trip. Highest marks and great appreciation for Will and Dave. Their expertise and thoughtfulness made the trip.Mary Anthony
Will was a shining example of the epitome of wilderness tour guide. He adjusted very well to everyone's diverse needs, even anticipated them. Will's knowledge and experiences were well applied and highly valued...truly a senior staff member. Dave likewise performed very well. His service manners were encouraging and helped make everyone feel even more welcome. Both guides were excellent mechanics with tools and spare parts to remedy every need. Together they worked in high performance mode to exceed expectations all around.Jerry Hobbs
The guides were excellent, we loved both Will and Simon and the skill and enthusiasm they brought to the job. Really made a big difference in the overall experience, well done!Paul Triolo
Both Will and Simon were very good - nothing too much trouble - knowledgeable - good bike mechanics! - good fun to be withPeter Burney
I can't imagine better guides than Will and Simon. From the first meeting at the train station to the final delivery of our suitcases to our hotel in Edinburgh, they took care of absolutely every aspect of the trip for us: tire changes, picnic prep (even with special requests), dealing with route changes, cheering on riders in the back, watching out for everyone's safety, lugging our suitcases, giving us info about the places we were going and things we were looking at. And they were just fun to hang out with at dinner.Helen Triolo
Our guides were Helen Marsden and Will Snow. I cannot say enough wonderful things about both of them. Helen is a font of wisdom and quite a botanist. We learned a lot from her. She was kind and patient with our kids. Will taught us a lot too about Scotland and biking and has given us a great desire to visit the Hebrides! He also was extraordinarily patient with our kids and very kind as well. Both Helen and Will made our trip truly exceptional. They were excellent guides with fantastic stores of knowledge regarding the geography, history, botany, architecture and culture pertinent to our trip and they were extremely thoughtful, thinking of things that would be of particular interest to our family.Heather Sena
Will was a perfect guide, always helpful, humerous and patient, with very good backround knowledge and local experience he arranged individual days full of wonderful walks, meetings with interesting people and awesome experience of the beautiful nature and landscape.Eva Maria Wagner
I have also referred to the exceptional guide we had on this tour but just to add to my comments- Will's personality was perfect for 5 unattached women. He handled up expertly. During the hikes, there were various levels of hiking proficiency. He managed to give the mountain goats their space to lead as well as never let the slowest person (me) ever feel that I was holding up the group. I liked the fact that he did not feel he had to lead and often positioned himself with different people during the hikes to visit. At the same time, he managed to keep us all in sight and on course.Cheryl Gillespie
Our tour guide, Will, was wonderfully calm and patient, always offering flexibility and a story to make a location special. Timelines for meeting etc were clear and generous. Never worried while he drove "on the wrong side" on those twisty narrow roads! He ensured the van was where it needed to be, traveling back or waiting in ferry lines, while we continued to walk or explore. His enthusiasm for the beaches (which were beyond amazing) and the local charm was contagious. Couldn't have asked for a better guide! Thanks Will!Patricia Warren
Will was a great guide. He is very knowledgeable about Scotland and the Hebrides. I liked that he wanted us to really see what makes the Hebrides such a unique place in the world. I learned a lot while enjoying myself hiking. This was my first real trip back to Scotland since I was a kid, bought back all the great memories I had of living thereNancy Masterson
Will was fabulous - an excellent your leader.Alison Tetley
We were very happy with Alan, our hiking guide. The only thing is that in an effort to avoid duplicating a short hike in Torridon, he opted for an estate road hike which was not that interesting and we could have had more hiking in Torridon or visited Applecross. But, he was great and stayed with us for far longer than scheduled and we did more than we likely would have. He was very accommodating and fun to talk with.Paul Goldshlack
Will was top, asked what we expected from the trip, what our expirience was, also our condition and give a lot of information on the tripBen Stevens
Will is a very good guidePiet Goddeeris
Our guides were amazing. They really blew us away! They couldn’t have done more for us and even put up with my husbands questionable jokes!Christine McComb
As mentioned Tim and Will went well above and beyond. They were good humoured, highly organised and very professional. They made the trip really pleasurable for me and they are the reason I would join Wilderness Scotland on future trips. They were excellent ambassadors for Wilderness Scotland and Scotland more broadly. I cannot speak highly enough of them. As an example, they offered fellow cycling travellers a coffee while we waited for the ferry to Harris on a wet and wild morning. To me that spoke volumes.Andy Davis
Both Will and Tim are excellent, both as cyclists and as tour guides: they took care of everything and really treated us.Anna Gardella
I really appreciated Will's passion for communicating the history of the place and the environment features. It made you really feeling into the place

Seriously though they were both gems through and through.

Will and Andy were great, super fun guides. They were both very interesting individuals and knowledgeable about a wide range of subjects. They were very professional, providing everything necessary to make our trip carefree and enjoyable. They dealt with all the trip's challenges in a timely and efficient manner, accommodated our special requests (dark chocolate!), helped with any issues and never got crabby!Jeanine Evenson
Our guide, Will was fun, attentive and his knowledge in geography was a plus. We were sad to say goodbye. In the last day we had Steve, a very nice too.Daniela Wiethaeuper
Will was amazing and very patience. He always was trying to make everyone in the group happy. He was geographer, so he knows a lot and was always trying to teach us something new. I dont have anything to tell him to improve, just keep being himself.Talia Bravo
Great attitude and kindness toward all of us. Very fun and informed. High marks for showing us a beautiful country.Marypat Friedman
Will did a great job in taking care of people with different skill levels. I think we all felt good about our progress.Margaret Hanson
If a handbook were to be written about good guiding, Will and Andy are the two to do so. I did not expect to have guides with such a deep love of the countryside, thorough and un-canned knowledge of ancient history, contemporary history, geography, all aspects of nature, and more. Their easy friendship, willingness to go the extra mile to accommodate the group's needs, and gentle senses of humor were appreciated. I will seek them out for future trips.Allison Slavick
Where did you find Will and Andy? Excellent in all aspects. Helpful but did not dote or patronize. Alway part of the group not separate and aloof. Will with a great knowledge of Scotland's geology and history and a willingness to share it. Loved the Scottish music he would play in the van. Andy always with a big smile and a good knowledge of the forestry, environmental practises, and local mountain biking scene. Became instant friends with us all.David Bach
Will was a great support to the group, encouraging us up the hills, and very knowledgeable about the Scottish landscape. Ben did an excellent job with the van, lunches and the luggage! Both were very cheerful, enthusiastic and helpful, and managed to make alternative arrangements on the day when our cycling was rained off - a distillery tour with tasting!Viv Burney
Thanks to Will and Ben for a relaxed approachIain Dibble
Both Ben and Will were prepared to go the extra mile to ensure we were enjoying the tour and their obvious love of what they do was infectious.Geraldine Cruickshank
Our guides were the highlight of the trip.Heather Patrick
Will and Simon were excellent.. Exceeded my expectations!!Brad Dennison
Will and Simon are amazing!Immanuel Douglass
Both are very fun, professional and knowledgable.
OK - this is going to sound like I am related to Will & Ben but they were outstanding. I appreciate Will staying back with me as I was always last up the hills and felt bad to be holding him back - until we saw the golden eagle and pine marten. I did skid out on a tar patch on the first day rolling through light rain on a descent and ended up with a side full of road rash. I want to emphasize that it was nothing the guides could have prevented as I was going too fast for conditions - my fault. The guides were courteous, considerate and cooperative. The integration of the group and the guides certainly added to the enjoyment of the trip. My bike was replaced timely. Sorry for the damage to the bar tape.Marty Joyce
Will went beyond the call of duty in his thoughtfulness and care of our group.David Hartwell
Will went out of his way to meet the diverse needs and varying abilities of the group to provide, not only a walking holiday, but a cultural initiation into the heart of the Highlands.Anne O'Hagan

As I said before, Will was wonderful. Sweet and personable. Chatted well with us all and shared lots of information, including geography lessons and introducing us to such Scottish cultural institutions as The Proclaimers and Sunshine on Leith!Mary Chute
Will was wonderful, when the weather was changeable so was Will, he made the trip interesting, and he saw to it that everyone had the best experience possible. He went out of his way for all of us. He made the trip great !!!Alanna Clark

Will and Ben were excellent companions and guides for the trip. A successful company comes down to the people in it and these two were excellent representatives.Jacques Cuneo
Will and Ben worked very hard to make the trip special, and they both show an obvious passion for what they do. They're very well organised, but at the same time gave us the freedom to explore and cycle at our own pace. Very professional and genuinely nice people - I wouldn't hesitate to travel with them again.Stephen Webb
Will Snow is the man! Super nice and knowledgeable of the area. Very helpful and always ready to get you whatever you needed. This is the kind of guide you want on every trip.Jaime Barajas
Kelty is an awesome guide as well. Sometimes I wish he was on the back of the group instead of the front. Some of the people were behind and you were always wondering if they were alright.
Really great guides thanks to Will and Ketly both of whom looked after us well , Will was particularly good , nothing was too much trouble for either of themJohn Lynch

Will Snow had more knowledge to impart about the area, its history and people than anyone could hope to retain. He jollied the group through some tricky conditions - you wouldn't know that he had a cold, had just got married and was on his second trip (out of three) in a row - he was endlessly patient and helpful.Alison Schulte
Will Snow was an excellent guide. He was knowledgable and caring. He did not overlook any detail in caring for our group.Sara Bain

Will and Simon were a brilliant team, knowledgeable, fun and provided encouragement all along the trip, can't speak highly enough of themElaine Coyle
Will and Simon were excellent guides for the road bike trip. Their knowledge of the area and places of interest made the trip a most enjoyable experience for me. They were both competent and confident in all aspects of their planning of the week. They both were very helpful in ensuring that we all had a very good week, and were even known to go that "extra mile or two" for me.Mike Edwards
Wilderness Scotland should be proud that these two guides are working for them.
Very helpful and enthusiastic, motivating. They also prepared excellent French press coffee and picnics. One or two of the locations for such stops were not ideal (a former petrol station with no loos), but dictated by the length of the van and trailer. I would have liked to be able to use the break periods to take photos of the scenery and group as well as refuel on caffeine and oat bars!Georgina Scholl
Nothing but praise. Knowledge of the route, locality and history gd. Easy going, polite, organised and entertaining.Hilary Jubert
Will and Ross were patient, informative, encouraging and most importantly fun to be with. They were key to the sucess of the the trip.Doreen Cantrell
Will and Ross were both excellent -- good-humoured, professional, patient with our sometimes wayward behaviour, good at reminding us of essential deadlines, and good at remembering that we were rather less fit than them. I was particularly grateful to Will for teaching me how to 'slipstream' behind him. I was also impressed that two guides who apparently hadn't met before got on so well with each other, adding to the pleasure of the trip of the rest of us.Lucy Wood
All excellentKelli Palfy

Will and Ben were an excellent team. I felt completely at ease with Will the entire trip he is knowledgeable and extremely personable-- easy to get on with. His knowledge of the region is superb. The perfect combination of information and encouragement over the steep bits. His emphasis on safety first was encouraging. Ben was the perfect domestique. He clearly has the cycling expertise, but taking on the support role was inspiring. He was all about having us each have a unique and memorable experience. Duncan was a great support as well.David Pines
