    Mini Bio

I love Scotland’s wild places and cycling through them. When I’m not on my bike I also enjoy sea kayaking and hill walking. After over a decade of leading overseas expeditions to Asia, Africa and Latin America combined with teaching Geography I’ve become about as settled down as a tour guide can ever be, living in the Highlands, although still like to venture overseas. I guided a sensory impairment charity trek to Kilimanjaro in June 2014.

Working for Wilderness Scotland has given me an opportunity to share the outstanding natural beauty of a world-class destination. The landscape and culture is unsurpassed. If I had to choose a favourite trip it would be quite difficult as it’s always a privilege to experience any journey in our remote surroundings with amicable, like-minded people.

Biking in the far north. Empty roads and wild trails.

Not a lot of people know this

I was the first person from Scotland to complete the ‘Tour Divide’, a 2745-mile long mountain bike race from Canada to Mexico.

In 2011 I biked the ‘Tour Divide’, a 2750 mile race from Banff, Canada to the Mexican border along the USA Continental Divide. This was my biggest physical adventure. My most rewarding adventure was helping to guide a friend who was both deaf and visually impaired up to the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2014.

Their knowledge and passion was powerful giving us insights into nature and the history of the islands. My wife was unable to ride and was in the support vehicle and they went out of their way to think of things to interest her, a visit to a museum, artist, pottery shop and walks. Their plan Bs slipped seamlessly into action adjusting to the weather conditions making the trip enjoyable and not an endurance test. The care they showed in preparing snacks, taking bags to rooms, monitoring bike frailties, supporting the slower members of the team and finding errant cyclists evidenced a huge sense of pride and professionalism in their role. Our tour guide, Will, was wonderfully calm and patient, always offering flexibility and a story to make a location special. Timelines for meeting etc were clear and generous. Never worried while he drove "on the wrong side" on those twisty narrow roads! He ensured the van was where it needed to be, traveling back or waiting in ferry lines, while we continued to walk or explore. His enthusiasm for the beaches (which were beyond amazing) and the local charm was contagious. Couldn't have asked for a better guide! Thanks Will!

Will was a great guide. He is very knowledgeable about Scotland and the Hebrides. I liked that he wanted us to really see what makes the Hebrides such a unique place in the world. I learned a lot while enjoying myself hiking. This was my first real trip back to Scotland since I was a kid, bought back all the great memories I had of living there

We were very happy with Alan, our hiking guide. The only thing is that in an effort to avoid duplicating a short hike in Torridon, he opted for an estate road hike which was not that interesting and we could have had more hiking in Torridon or visited Applecross. But, he was great and stayed with us for far longer than scheduled and we did more than we likely would have. He was very accommodating and fun to talk with.

As mentioned Tim and Will went well above and beyond. They were good humoured, highly organised and very professional. They made the trip really pleasurable for me and they are the reason I would join Wilderness Scotland on future trips. They were excellent ambassadors for Wilderness Scotland and Scotland more broadly. I cannot speak highly enough of them. As an example, they offered fellow cycling travellers a coffee while we waited for the ferry to Harris on a wet and wild morning. To me that spoke volumes.

OK - this is going to sound like I am related to Will & Ben but they were outstanding. I appreciate Will staying back with me as I was always last up the hills and felt bad to be holding him back - until we saw the golden eagle and pine marten. I did skid out on a tar patch on the first day rolling through light rain on a descent and ended up with a side full of road rash. I want to emphasize that it was nothing the guides could have prevented as I was going too fast for conditions - my fault. The guides were courteous, considerate and cooperative. The integration of the group and the guides certainly added to the enjoyment of the trip. My bike was replaced timely. Sorry for the damage to the bar tape.
