      Day 1

Inverness to the Isle of Skye

Meet your Wilderness guide at Inverness train station this morning and enjoy a scenic drive west to the magical Isle of Skye. Along the way, take in the spectacular views as you wind your way over Mam Ratigan Pass, following an old drover’s road to the tiny settlement of Glenelg where you catch the community-owned turntable ferry to Skye. Once ashore, we take a short walk to a wildlife hide to try and catch a glimpse of the elusive otters on the shoreline. A short transfer will take you to your cosy accommodation in the colourful coastal town of Portree.

After breakfast, head out with your guide for a beautiful walk. Hike along the coast and past the ruins of two villages abandoned during the Highland Clearances. Chat with your guide about this incredibly dark time in Scottish history as you explore the mossy walls of the old houses. As the soft breeze carries the smell of salt and sunshine across the heather, follow the rocky shore below cliffs that lurch towards the sea. Gradually ascend above the white-flecked waves, listening to the raucous call of seabirds, before returning to your hotel to relax.

This morning, wind your way to Elgol – a tiny hamlet scattered along the western cliffs of the Strathaird Peninsula. From a small jetty, sail over Loch Scavaig into the very heart of the Black Cuillin. Upon reaching the shore, leave the boat to explore Loch Coruisk, a deep dark loch that stretches like a shadow below the volcanic peaks. Enjoy being immersed in this wild landscape. While there isn’t much ascent today, the walking is sometimes rough, and a couple of river crossings involve stepping stones. Back at your hotel this evening, enjoy dinner after a day well spent.

      Exploring the Isle of Raasay

As the morning mist recedes across the water, catch a small ferry to the quiet and geologically diverse Isle of Raasay. Often overlooked, this peaceful island offers much to explore. From the distinctive, rugged peak of Dùn Caan to coastal circuits on swathes of golden sand, there’s a myriad of engaging walks to choose from. Keep an eye out for wildlife, perhaps spotting the soaring silhouette of a white-tailed eagle, known in Gaelic as ‘iolaire sùil na grèineas’ – the eagle with the sunlit eye. Return to mainland Skye later this afternoon and transfer to your second accommodation of the trip.

This salt-stung bluff is a beautiful, quiet place to spot whales and dolphins on a calm day, as well as enjoying stunning views of the dramatic sea cliffs of the distant Dunvegan Head. During the walk, pass the ancient ruins of one of the best-preserved brochs on Skye, learning about the island’s history and hearing enchanting tales of faeries, selkies, and kelpies.
