    Balancing Adventure and Relaxation

Gravel biking combines the essence of road and mountain biking, offering the thrill of riding off-road. Gravel riders can tackle a variety of terrains, including gravel paths, forest trails, and narrow single track.

Designed with extended frames and wider tyres, gravel bikes handle rough ground better than road bikes while also being faster and more rigid than mountain bikes. This balance makes gravel adventures both comfortable and efficient, inviting riders to explore scenic, less-travelled routes and immerse themselves in nature.

By placing the joy of the journey at its centre rather than being focused on times, miles and power output, ‘gravel’ is more of a state of mind than anything else. Enjoy riding through beautiful wild landscapes, visiting pretty, bustling villages, and exploring interesting historical sites. The capability of a gravel bike means travelling further faster but without forgoing comfort or being able to link up cafes on quiet secondary roads. Joined by an experienced bike guide who knows the best coffee and caramel cake spots, there’s no need to worry about directions, accommodations, meals or mechanicals.

Moreover, a gravel biking trip is a sustainable holiday choice. Travelling under your own power offers a mindful, responsible way to discover new places. With most of your time spent outdoors, you’re more likely to glimpse wildlife like deer grazing in the heather clad hills and red squirrels scampering through ancient pine forests. There’s also nothing quite like arriving at your accommodation, unclipping your shoes, shaking out your helmet hair, and savouring a well-earned dinner after a day in the saddle.

Every client receives a feedback survey when they return from their guided, self guided or tailor made holiday with us. Once completed the review is published on our website just as soon as our database updates. The little touches and details are important to us and where issues are raised we make positive changes to our trips to improve your experience.

That’s why we read each of our client’s reviews and although we don’t respond to all of them, if it’s glowing feedback then we get the satisfaction of helping to make your holidays truly memorable.

    The Bottom Line

    The Bottom Line

Bottom line on the trip is that I would do it again in a heart beat. Gravel riding in Scotland isn't like gravel riding anywhere I have been so far. Much harder and much more remote so next time I would get in better shape for the trip and not bring me own bike (use Wilderness Scotland's bikes). But that was part of what made the trip exceptional. It was such a complete escape from my everyday life and pushed me to be a better rider. The guides made the trip the amazing experience that it was.

    The Bottom Line

    The Bottom Line

This was my fourth cycling holiday with Wilderness Scotland, and my first experience of Gravel Biking. Riding the Highland Gravel Trail was an exhilarating experience, and there was a great sense of achievement when we reached the Moray Firth. We passed through a wide range of terrain, from idyllic lowland valleys to remote upland wilderness, and saw rivers, lochs and mountains up close, and without a car in sight. As recommended by a well known sportwear brand 'Just do it'. I'm glad I did.
