David was the perfect guide and instructor. He chose great places to photo and was exceptionally helpful in explaining how to use the camera, whether in "bad weather", or day or night. Of greatest appreciation, he taught not only with knowledge of the areas, but with sensitivity and encouragement. I highly recommend him.

The trip to Torridon, with the boat ride and Hotel stay was just right. The visit to GlenCoe House was tops! Maybe a stay there next time. That I was able to celebrate my birthday in the Highlands makes me want to return.

We loved everything, but the only comment was Fross hotel. The food is great, but it is a bit outdated in decor and the location is not great, everything around you is farmland and wind turbines, coming from the west, north west of Scotland to that part was with regards to environment a bit disappointing. As a 1 night it is fine but 2 nights I think it is a bit long. However this is purely my feeling and other guests might love it. However the rest of the trip was fantastic and well organised. Thanks a ton!!!!!!!

The web site is very good, but it was still somewhat difficult for me to get a complete grasp on the adventure I would be signing up for. I am from the US and knew nothing about the area. The phone calls I made with David and another of your staff really helped me get a complete picture.
Trip Comments
There were no mistakes with any of the reservations. We were always expected. The hotels were wonderful, the ferry reservations paid for, the hiking and activity guides/suggestions and maps that you gave us perfect. Best of all, David was a fabulous guide, historian, conservationist, trekker. I wish my hip had been in better shape, but we adjusted. Overall your service and suggestions of what to do were top notch. Will recommend you to everyone I know.
Accommodation and Food
As I said before, all lodging was great, breakfasts (included) also fine. We found great restaurants for dinners. Wouldn't recommend any changes.

There can be no better guide than David Russell. Hope he is well. Great future ahead for him.

the trip matched exactly what we had been seeking in the trip. lots of outdoor adventures, plus good family bonding time.
Accommodation and Food
the quality of the accommodations was a bit mixed. but we made our plans late which could very well have impacted availability.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
This trip covered various regions of the Highlands and Islands. In some areas, there is a fairly limited selection of hotels, with no 5-star hotels. However, we we pleased to secure the best available hotels in each location at fairly short notice in high season.
Your Guide
Dave did a really nice job. the hikes were spectacular!
The Bottom Line
it was a great trip, my son and I both enjoyed it immensely. and it was exactly what we had sought.

the one area that I felt could have been improved was around the trip budget/cost. this was among the most expensive trips I've ever taken. the budget ended up being one number and I had no visibility into the component parts of the trip and Wilderness Scotland's mark-up on it. also, options as to how we might have value engineered the trip would have been appreciated (for example, we didn't need the entire fourth floor at the Glencoe House). but to be fair, I didn't push in either of these areas.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We were delighted to arrange this custom trip in high season at 6 weeks notice. While we didn't discuss individual items within the pricing, the final price of the trip came in under your original budget. As we've now discussed, we'd be happy to discuss which are the 'big ticket' items in the itinerary in the future, so that you can be sure that particular experiences are worth it. We're glad that you had a great trip and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

The sailing trip was designed to accommodate our specific requirements which included a mixed bag of sailing experience and age range. Laurie Mill and his boat Bluebird were a perfect choice. He offered instruction with expertise and patience and he managed the entire voyage with competence and a fun sense of adventure.
Trip Comments
On the third day out we were approached by a large pack/pod/herd (not sure what the correct terminology is) of dolphins. They are much larger than those we often see in the Gulf of Mexico. There were seven or eight in total and they swam alongside of us for about 20 minutes. I've got some video and photos of them which I plan to share with Laurie, if you would like me to send you the images I'd be happy to.
Accommodation and Food
Laurie is an accomplished chef. The meals were well planned and the quality of the food excellent.
Your Guide
I was impressed by the adaptability of our tour to shift with the ever changing weather patterns. Laurie was willing to help me find sheltered coves in which to paint and strong wind channels in which to sail. This was a key element to the success of our sailing trip.
The Bottom Line
As we were making the arrangements from several thousand miles away, it was difficult to know what conditions, challenges or opportunities we might expect. Stevie listened closely to what we hoped to do and then found the perfect solution. It really couldn't be any better than that.

Every aspect of the trip was taken care of...from the moment the guide met our train to when we were dropped off at our departure point ten days later. Flawless.
Accommodation and Food
We had a private trip, and the accommodations were amazing and perfect for our needs. The chefs were experienced and very accomplished.
Your Guide
If there was a score above "Excellent" I would give it to our guide, Andy! He was completely amazing. We have had a fair number of guides over the years, and he is an absolutely top-notch professional. His command of history, geology, botany and the mountain environment is really unsurpassed. He's obviously an extremely accomplished climber, and he's a great person to boot! Please forward our compliments to whomever Andy reports as we want them to know how very pleased we have been for the past eight days.
The Bottom Line
You don't need to look any further for a guiding company. Wilderness Scotland has it all covered, and you can't do better. They did a five-star job.

Rachael was very responsive, understood what I was trying to describe, and always let us know when she was going to be away and who to contact.
Trip Comments
This trip was one of the best in a series of outstanding trips we've taken. The people were the best part of the trip, but all activities were great fun; some riotously so (making scones, tubing and mountain biking); some just a little bit hair-raising (canoeing on Loch Ness); and some just plain enchanting (the ceilidh and dancing, Spey-side dinner with the umbrella floating down the river, and singing to the cows at Knocktulchan). Oh, and the food, of course. And talking to artisans and artists and seeing their work. Learning about spinning, dyeing, weaving, curing lambskins; the geology, history, flora and fauna of Scotland. Also forestry and land management. The brooding landscapes of Glencoe and Culloden. The spectacular scenery. Iona and Staffa. Fingal's Cave and the puffins. Taking a rigid inflatable boat from Mull to Glencoe and keeping company part of the way with a joyously playful pod of bottlenose dolphins. And always, always, the company.
Accommodation and Food
The accommodations on Mull weren't exactly fabulous (the massage was a nice touch, though). All the other accommodations were. The food also, with special mentions to Knocktulchan, Three Chimneys, Aird's and the bakery where we made scones.
Your Guide
John Ormiston: Highly professional, knowledgable, loves his subject, patient, flexible, fun, funny, smart, thoughtful, careful, entertaining, perceptive and sensitive to the needs of others and an excellent listener.

Eilid Ormiston: Also highly professional, knowledgable, extremely patient, sensitive to others, thoughtful and smart with a gentle sense of humor. Markedly empathetic and also an excellent listener. She and John work very well together.

My favorite Scottish artist, John Bellany, often depicts his subjects wearing fish on their heads, which I love. So, I don't know, maybe they could improve their performances by wearing fish on their heads, but I don't think this is really necessary, especially as long as John appears at least once in a kilt and bearing whiskey (which I forgot to mention as another favorite).
The Bottom Line
Outstanding, creatively planned and led trip, including what we had asked for, plus some wonderful surprises, and also the flexibility to include some activities that appealed to us on the spur of the moment.

As a guest of your client my only experience was in interacting with Rachael who was more than helpful in assisting us with the myriad and confusing details of our packing and travel arrangements.
Trip Comments
Our schedule was packed back to back with physical and cultural events. Some of the excursions are a bit difficult to rate since some of the outings (such as the cultural visits--Culloden, the Highland Folk Museum, Land Rover safari, the spinning mill) I enjoyed, but would not want to do again, while others (tubing, canoeing, biking, sea kayaking, and hiking), I truly couldn't get enough of. We didn't get a chance to see sheepdog trials which would have been fascinating.
Accommodation and Food
The Knocktulchan Lodge was truly PERFECT for our group and the catering was beyond expectations. Really, really, really fantastic!!!! The chef and his wife were an absolute delight.
Your Guide
John and Eilid were terrific--knowledgeable and accommodating. It was a plus to get some mini lessons in Scotland's geographic, historical, political and cultural past and present--as well as an intro into the finer distinctions of whiskey tasting.
The Bottom Line
We travel multiple times a year. This was by far the best trip we've ever been on. It doesn't hurt that you begin with some of the most beautiful countryside in the world.

Everything was great! Hiking, archery, biking, tubing, kayaking, canoeing, ziplining, whisky tasting, music, stories, food, etc.
Accommodation and Food
Food was excellent quality. For the bag lunch days, it would have been nice to be able to select our food/drink (if only from a few options), but that's a minor point.
Your Guide
Both John and Eilid were excellent guides -- very patient with our group, very knowledgeable, etc.

We had some hesitation about whether or not to spend so much of our vacation budget on a Tailor Made holiday. The first six hours with our wonderful guide, Gordon Anderson, resolved every doubt. Gordon’s careful planning, calm presence, measured pace and wide ranging knowledge added immeasurably to our family vacation. His lessons on Scottish history, geology, and ecology enhanced our appreciation for the beauty of the highlands, and we returned home from our trip with real admiration for the Scottish people -- something we never anticipated. In fact, our time with Gordon convinced us that we need to return to Scotland for a much longer holiday!

Really liked the back and forth about what we wanted to do and best places to go. I would have liked to get a feel of the places booked ahead of time and perhaps change some locations but had to accept the entire package. However, we really loved every place we stayed and it worked out fine.
One instance we were particularly pleased with was that you handled the ferry schedules extremely well. We made the ferry from Bernerary to Leverburg before the low tides cancelled afternoon ferries for the next two days. That would certainly have screwed up our itinerary to not be able to travel those days!!!
Trip Comments
Folks really respected Wilderness Scotland. Loved the Hebrides, felt Skye a bit crowded, although the hikes were wonderful. Eigg was a highlight. Could have spent another day there! Captain of the boat to Eigg was a wonderful character. Really interesting man. Kayaking at Arisaig was a little below our abilities, although quite beautiful. Placed with total newbies rather than an experienced paddlers tour.
Skye boat trip at Elgol was a highlight. (We were taken out on a large inflatable by the guy who took Danny McCaskill (mountain biker) to do his crazy bike stunts on the summits so lots of fun discussion!)
St Kilda was one of our highlights, although we used a different boat to get us there. Sea Harris had fabulous boat and Seamus is very charming. Suggest you look at them!
Lots of comments on the B&Bs as to best breakfasts, best rooms, favorite innkeepers to come.
Accommodation and Food
Ardlui Hotel--tiny room, no view. Really good dinner.
Craigbank - tiny room on street side, noisy. Great breakfast room and hospitable hosts.
Bridge of Orchy - Huge room down toward river, quiet. Great dinner and breakfast.
Distance was perfect, wouldn't have wanted to walk farther.
Heatherlea - Large room, exceptional welcome. Hosts very generous in driving us to and from evening restaurant. Taxi driver right on time to/from Kingshouse.
Edencoille - Best breakfast on WHW and really on entire trip. Elegant but small room. a bit longer walk, but we loved the B&B.
Tigh na Drochaid - It was really hard to pass the B& B and walk all the way into town to the finish before coming back to spend the night, but really nice people and good accommodation. It was Bankers Holiday weekend and difficult to get dinner reservations in Ft William. We weren't prepared for this.
Kildonan Farm House - Eigg. Marie is a fabulous cook--wonderful family style dinner, great bedroom with views, very congenial sitting room. Colin also amazing. We really enjoyed this stay!
Old Library, Arisaig - Good dinner, adequate room.
Milivaig, Portree - We voted Dolly best hostess of trip, along with Christy in Scalpay. Dolly gave us ideas on places to visit, made dinner reservations for us and went out of her way to help. Room good size, lots to do on Skye, nice quiet neighborhood.
Kinloch, So Uist - Directions off here, but we found it. should read that you turn left on road signposted to Loch Sgiopoirt and then B&B is 20 yards on right hand side. Wegg is a total character and a very good cook. Served homecooked dinners which was great given that the road is single track here and other restaurants quite far away. He had best fruit in breakfasts! Wegg is social and wants to interact with guests so need to match with folks ready for this. We loved it. Said first time with Wilderness Scotland. Mostly fishing clientele.
Highcroft B&B, Scalpay - Christy was our other favorite hostess. She helped with dinner reservations. It would have been nice to know that there was no place in Scalpay for dinner without reservations, especially on a Sunday night. The road is challenging to get out there and we had to go back into Tarbert for dinner the first night after finding her. Good room, wonderful views, a bit off the beaten path!
Ardvreck House, Ullapool - Evelyn was also a fabulous hostess. We had a gorgeous room, great views. good time!
Your Guide
Self guided. Notes were fine.
The Bottom Line
We have tried to give you some detail. Please feel free to contact us for specific questions. Loved the experience, and it didn't hurt that we only had 1/2 day of rain in three weeks in Scotland!!!

We would never have booked this trip with Wilderness Scotland if it weren't for Rachel. I had contacted a number of companies, each with the same description of what we were looking for. Rachel is the only one who said, Call me, there is too much to talk about in an email. The others referred me to websites. Little did Rachel know what she was getting into as we had to massage the plans over and over until we got them right. And, yes, the trip she planned for us was perfect in every detail.
My only minor concern, was that every other trip we have gone on gave us vouchers for hotels, etc. When I didn't need any for this, it made me nervous to be coming over there with nothing in my hands. It only took a night for me to realize it was all fine. Probably more my issue than yours.
We especially appreciated out anniversary gift.
Trip Comments
This trip was one of the best we have ever taken. Our guide, Tim, was able to find the exact trails I had imagined Scotland to be. We appreciated him making sure the weather fit those imaginations as well. And although Tim and my eyes started to glaze over with all the historical stuff, that made my husband very happy.
Accommodation and Food
Glencoe House was so over the top, I can't even begin to describe the experience. We never have, nor will we again, stay in something like that, watching the sunset from his and hers tubs. Get out of here.
Hotel Bonham was our next favorite room, lots of space, excellent service, and walkable to town. The B&B at Canowindra was wonderful. Our hostess was so accommodating, even making us a takeaway (we did learn to speak Scottish, to us that's carryout) breakfast for our early ferry day. Our large room had been an add on to the attic so the ceiling was a bit low and slanted in places and I won't tell you how many times we hit our heads. We had the quick one night stay in Inverness. The room was a little small with an equally small shower, but the service was first class and it was right in the heart of everything.
As for meals, Tim knew where our hearts lay. We valued a good bowl of soup over everything else and, that he got for us.
Your Guide
Let's See. Tim loves Scotland, he loves the outdoors, and he loves his "office." That makes him the best guide ever, and Rick adds that he was also a fun traveling companion. He appraised what we could do very quickly and gave us the maximum experience, even with uncooperative weather. Would want to book him again in a heartbeat, but he would probably want to run for cover.
The Bottom Line
How much do I love you guys? Am trying to book a guide with your for our daughter who will be there in June for Ben Nevis.
Trying to figure out how to save enough for our next Scottish adventure (which will have to include golf).

Our tailor-made trip to the Highlands and Islands went very well overall. The beauty of the mountains was awesome and the small isles lovely. If I had to choose a single most wonderful experience, it would be kayaking near Arisaig with dozens of curious seals popping up to watch us.
Accommodation and Food
All four of our accommodations (and accompanying breakfasts) were excellent but especially wonderful was the Cullin Hills Hotel in Portree - fabulous view and we were given the top-of-turret room - loved it!
Your Guide
The route notes were very good overall, detailed enough for us along with the maps provided. It might have been even better if we'd received them even earlier before the trip, so I would have had more time to research more information about each specific area; but really they were fine. All our connections went smoothly except for a couple small hitches: the train we planned to take from Aviemore to Inverness was suspended on Sundays (which happened to be our day for that travel) but replaced by bus. Fortunately I looked into getting tickets a few days earlier so I had time to make the adjustment suitably. The other problem was with the ferry from Mallaig to Skye: the packet did not include the proper voucher, I thought it had but turned out (which I found out only when showing up with it at the ferry check-in) that we were only supplied with the confirmation letter for the booking from the ferry company, not a voucher from Wilderness Scotland. After much back and forth to the car to search yet again for a voucher I never received, luckily the clerk was able to use the information from the booking to Rum (which was cancelled from our itinerary but never cancelled through the ferry office) to produce a sort of voucher. Anyway, an annoyance but not a huge deal.
The Bottom Line
Very enjoyable trip and we plan to return in a few years - with Wilderness Scotland once again tailoring our perfect vacation.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE
We are delighted that you had such a wonderful time in Scotland with the richness of the scenery and also glad to hear that sea kayaking at Arisaig was a highlight, what a great spot!
Please accept my apologies for the ferry voucher that was missing your pack and the difficulties you had getting on the Mallaig to Armadale ferry, we really hope it didn’t cause too much confusion!
We hope to welcome you back to the Highlands again the future.

Dave and Henry were both fantastic in looking after us, route planning, general knowledge of the history of the area which we all found VERY interesting, good natural history and good company to be with. It was a C2C cycling trip but the added value of history, ornithology and Natural history really helped to bring an added dimension to the trip from Dave who was our guide most of the time.

The evening and daily stop food was of a very high standard. The ones that stand out were the Pines and the restaurant we went to on the last night.

We hiked part of the Great Glen Way and although we loved it, we were thinking it was going to be more secluded than it was. We could see traffic across the lochs. We were also thinking the paths might be a little more challenging. The paths were extremely well kept and very easy to walk on with practically no elevation changes. This is great for some people but we were expecting it to be a little different. Had we known the paths would be this smooth, we may have preferred to bike.
Accommodation and Food
Every place we stayed was very welcoming and had excellent food.
Your Guide
We had a guided sea kayaking day and our guide, Stuart, was wonderful. He arrived early to pick us up and waited until we were ready to go. We felt comfortable and safe with him and he made the trip fun. Next, the directions for our walk were perfect. I was a little worried prior to the start of the trip because there was not a smaller map of each town we went to and where the bed and breakfast would be. However, when we were on the trip the written directions were all accurate and dead on descriptions of how to get the the bed and breakfasts. We had no problems with directions!
The Bottom Line
We had an excellent time on our honeymoon in Scotland. Wilderness Scotland made planning our honeymoon easy as we were so busy planning our wedding. We enjoyed the Highlands of Scotland from the beauty of the area to the friendliness of the people!

The itinerary was excellent. All of the logistics worked flawlessly. The add-on's (cycling, hiking, the boat ride) were the best parts of the trip and things we would have never arranged ourselves. Our guide on our adventures, Patrick, was knowledgeable, helpful, and an enjoyable guy to be around.
Accommodation and Food
We loved the Balmoral & Blytheswood Square. Muckrach was also lovely. The Cuillin Hills Hotel was fine and exactly what we would have expected for Skye. The Kingsmills in Inverness was the miss. It's a conference centre and our room was in the Spa building which felt very much like a modern business hotel, not in keeping with the rest of our trip. Fonab was fine. Common complaint, especially when traveling with a 21-year old was the speed of the wifi in the hotels. In Fonab for example, we actually had to leave our room to connect to the wifi, but hey, if that's our biggest complaint, the trip was great.
Your Guide
Patrick was great. Flexible, helpful, knowledgeable, and fun to be around.
The Bottom Line
Would heartily endorse Wilderness Scotland for all the reasons previously stated. All of the logistics worked well, but the add-on's made the trip special.

One thought...we'd suggest in the early stages of the plan preparation that there be more conversation about the nature of the accommodations the Client seeks. We would have preferred alternatives to Kingsmills and Fonab, and also would have really valued Queen beds wherever possible (was available at Cuillin Hills for example, but we didn't get it).

Pre-Trip Service
I really appreciated the opportunity to do a tailor made trip. The packaged trips looked wonderful and would have fit our budget better but we didn't have the time available to make it work. For many families trying to figure out a fun and active vacation in a new country is so much work. Wilderness Scotland made it so easy. With just a few ideas from me, Kirsty was able to send me a full itinerary and budget. We had a wonderful time and we figure that we probably did about 3 times as much as we would have been able to accomplish on our own (finding our way, figuring out logistics etc.)

I was also very happy with the communication with Kirsty prior to our trip. She made sure we had all of the information we needed and was always available for questions. Mostly though, we felt that our wishes got translated into an itinerary that showed a real knowledge of what Scotland had to offer that was tailored to the unique interests and needs of our family.
Trip Comments
Our four days with our guide Jeremy were a real treat. Although we had a pretty full itinerary he kept it a relaxed experience. He was able to help me get much, much more comfortable with Kayaking and inspired me to want to do even more kayaking. My sixteen year old son loved the entire trip especially the mountain biking. My husband got a well deserved break where he didn't think about work! We felt like we saw a lot of highlights of Scotland but mostly appreciated the chance to hike, bike, speedboat, canoe and kayak through Scotland (Fort William, Ben Nevis, Loch Ness etc. etc.). It was an amazing four days that we won't soon forget. Especially since Jeremy took some great pictures for us.
Accommodation and Food
The bed and breakfast was excellent as was most of our stops.
Your Guide
Our guide made the trip what it was. He set the tone for our trip and found a way to guide each of us in a way that suited our needs and personalities. I really appreciated his ability to encourage me with the kayaking which I was hesitant about, but still found a way to make the experience appropriate for my husband and 16 year old son who like more excitement and physical challenge. Because Jeremy has experience he makes it look easy but we have had previous experience with other guided trips (not Wilderness Scotland!) so we really appreciated the caliber and quality of experience that Jeremy was able to provide.
The Bottom Line
Thank-you for a great family vacation! My special thanks to Kirsty and Jeremy for pulling it off.

Honestly, as much as everything was well planned, etc., we owe that added specialness to our guide, Peter Grant. He was amazing in every way in how he was responsive to our varied needs, a delight to engage every day, and wonderfully patient, humorous, and personable.
Accommodation and Food
The Abbey Hotel was not our biggest thrill (although the back garden and walled park complex, as well as overall location was cool) - a little dirty (moldy ceiling) and the woman front desk was a wee bit strange (brash at times). St. Anthony's and Ravenscreig were great, although St. Anthony's could have been a wee bit more flexible (wouldn't give us a regular breakfast a half hour earlier and the two days in a row we needed the cold breakfast, nothing was replenished for the second day). The Bosseville hotel was okay, but one of our rooms was over the bar and it was very noisy until after midnight - but, excellent breakfasts - yet, their packed lunch was extremely subpar - just tomato lettuce and a smear of something eggy on bread with crisps and fruit.
Your Guide
Peter Grant endeared us to him from the start. He truly made our trip "special" and we looked forward to being with him every day. He was wonderfully personable, had a fun, humorous side, very gentle in spirit, and overall fascinating with whom to converse.
The Bottom Line
We had a wonderful family vacation - that's what it truly was all about for us. Last year, we took a Disney cruise around the Greek Isles, and it was nowhere near as fulfilling of a familial bonding experience as our trip with Wilderness Scotland.

Peter Grant, our guide, was personable and cheerful! He had a tough job having to manage the interests of a diversified group- age 13 to 80! He really made our trip special.
Accommodation and Food
I would not stay at the Abbey Hotel in Edinburgh again. The rooms were very small and some of the staff were a bit sharp. Our lunch provided from the Bosville Hotel in Portree was really marginal after having such a lovely lunch from the deli in Fort William. The breakfasts were always yummy, except the inflexible times at Saint Andrew's. In all, we were quite pleased with the B&B experience.
Your Guide
Peter Grant was just superb! Ben and Stuart with the Rockhopper kayak trip were cheerful and managed us in some rough seas. Kyle was a very bubbly personality for archery.
The Bottom Line
The trip was great. The weather was better than I expected. I would definitely schedule in a rest day or half day of rest for an active schedule. I am a very early riser, so I would have been out and about by 7am and had the afternoon to rest, but it didn't work well with my group. I would have declined the gorge swimming on the roster if I had known the average water temp in Aviemore pre-booking. As it was I paid for the adventure in advance and did not go. I would have also skipped the archery and spent longer on the bikes. I have already recommended your company to several of my colleagues at work. Cheers!

It was nice to get the 'final' itinerary for the trip prior to our departure but it sure seems like we could have had them several weeks earlier so I could have ensured I was properly equipped.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We endeavor to send final information to clients approximately 4 weeks prior to departure although with tailor made trips, requirements for the trip are discussed at time of trip creation so you should have all the information you need well in advance. WE are always happy to receive a call if you have any questiosn prior to receiving your final trip information :-)
Trip Comments
The guides we were matched up with were an excellent fit for our needs.
Accommodation and Food
On one hand it was nice to stay in the same lodging for several days (Plochton) but it seems like we did a lot of additional driving to make that location work and the accomodations were only OK. Perhaps someplace on Isle of Skye would have entailed less driving and potentially a nicer Inn. We typically chose dinner so our choices met our needs; breakfast was provided by our lodging and I have no complaints about that or lunch.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
It's always a balance between moving on each day and staying in one location for a few days to immerse yourself in the local area. Part of the reason there was additional driving was that this trip was tailored further throughout your time in Scotland to better fit your requirements for the trip - one of the advantages of opting for tailor made is that this can be done compared to a scheduled trip although not possible to change accommodation at short notice. In hindsight, the Isle of Skye would have been a good option and next time we'll have an even better idea of what your desired trip should entail.
Your Guide
The guides get an A+ every day.
The Bottom Line
A very nice experience and I would recommend your organization to a friend; I would also use your organization should I plan to come back to Scotland in the future. Thank you very much for a great experience (this was my third time visiting Scotland).

The website was our initial contact and was what convinced us to go with Wilderness Scotland. Rachael was great to work with and listened to what we wanted. Responses were slow initially but developed nicely.
Trip Comments
We wanted a combination of outdoor activities and cultural highlights. The wool mill, brewery tour, battlefield were excellent cultural highlights. Unfortunately we missed activities that were scheduled too close after one another.
Hiking was excellent and tailored to our abilities.
Our guide was great with the outdoor activities though he was not well versed in the cultural highlights and history.
Accommodation and Food
The accommodations were first rate. We couldn't improve on them. The guide's recommendations for restaurants were also good.
Your Guide
He was great and very accommodating. His understanding of the hiking area and tailoring hikes to our abilities was first rate. He understood that he was limited in terms of cultural and historical sites but made the best of it. If we were to go on another trip and plan more hikes, we would ask for him again.
The Bottom Line
It was a great experience. We wanted to see the coastline and possibly go to Skye but understood that we were limited in terms of time. The next time we go we will plan more time to visit these areas.
For the time that we had, we had a great experience and it was the best part of our trip which included London and Paris. Our only regret is that we didn't spend more time in Scotland.

Pre-Trip Service
It was very easy working with the folks at Wilderness Scotland. My only suggestion is that once reservations are secured, send the package to the traveler so that other travel arrangements can be better made. For instance, it would have been helpful to know what hotel we were going to be in at the beginning of our trip, so that we could better plan our transportation and daily activities ahead of time. I like to really plan ahead!!
Trip Comments
Everything went flawlessly. All of our reservations were in place when we arrived and the luggage transport company did a fine job of getting our luggage to our lodgings on each day.
Accommodation and Food
Overall the accommodations and food were great. We did have one B&B that I would not recommend booking again. It was the Ghlas Druim in Glencoe. This B&B smelled very musty/moldy and we both felt fairly off after sleeping there. The windows in our room were locked shut, so we couldn't air the room out. On the other hand both the Corlinnhe (Fort William) and the Hillview (Crianlarich) were great. Ian and Anne at Hillview were extremely nice and accommodating!

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We constantly review our accommodations and hence feedback such as this is very useful and allows us to work with the accommodations in question to improve the service and standards offered. I'm just sorry that Ghlas Drum was not up to standard but I'm glad you enjoyed the rest of your accommodations, especially in Fort William and Crianlarich.
Your Guide
We did not have guides on our trip.
The Bottom Line
We had a great time. Walking Scotland is by far the best way to connect with the landscape and the country!!

Information was not complete : as last minute changes were made some information was missing (e.g., dinner)

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
Thanks for your feedback. It is true that there were changes up until the last minute however this was a very last minute trip. You contacted us one week before your arrival date so we needed to use all the time available to create the trip for you and your family. We're sorry you found that some information was missing; we do provide a trip dossier that includes all the details of the trip including details of all meals that are included and we are always on hand if you have any questions or anything is unclear.
Trip Comments
Low: No instructtor with fly fishing;; B&B was less quality than expected drom price
High: Fonab Castle (friendly staff) + tree hike

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We're sorry that you didn’t enjoy the fishing. As you know our regular fishing area was not available because of floods and we did suggest several other alternatives that would have suited your family better than fishing, much along the lines of the 'tree hike' which was a high point of your trip. However you were very keen to fish so we did arrange that for you. Fly-fishing is a solitary sport and it is not the case that you will have instruction the whole time or someone with you, once you have been shown the basics then typically you are left to enjoy the river. We're sorry if this is not what you were expecting and appreciate your feedback so we can make this clearer in the future.

We are really surprised you did not like your accommodation in the Cairngorms. It genuinely is the nicest and highest rated guesthouse in the area and we were really lucky to be able to book the rooms at such short notice.
Accommodation and Food
Due to relatively high price we thought the B&B was of too low quality

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We are really surprised you did not like your accommodation in the Cairngorms. It genuinely is the nicest and highest rated guesthouse in the area and we were really lucky to be able to book the rooms at such short notice. Both the accommodation and restaurant has won numerous awards and is feature in both the Good Food and Good Hotel Guide as well as the Michelin Guide. These kind of accolades, and especially level of cuisine included, do come at a price compared to other accommodation but we will feed back your comments to the accommodation provider.
Your Guide
Nice guy, very good interaction with the kids
The Bottom Line
Great trip, good organization but from price perspective either too expensive or accomodation of too low stamdard

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We do really appreciate all the feedback we receive so thanks for taking the time to send us it. The accommodation you stayed at is genuinely one of the best in the area with an amazing restaurant but we will pass on your comments. It sounds like you had a good time overall so hopefully we can welcome you to the highlands again soon.

You genuinely can not fault this area of business - Karl was brilliant with me and the flexibility re payment and info from the group was incredibly helpful and reassuring!

We paddled down the River Spey in glorious weather in mid October! There had been a bit of rain pre trip which had made the river swell a little giving us some fun water but ensuring our varying skill group able to paddle and enjoy! Low point... getting on the plane back to our day job! This is a trip you can not improve!!!
Accommodation and Food
The camping was awesome - we were able to make fires... man like fire!! And eat warm hearty meals filling us full of tasty goodness but ensuring the carb load pre paddle! More duck pate...!!!
Your Guide
Although technically not a wilderness guide (and I completely understand why you do what you do) Biscuit was brilliant, genuinely happy and caring wanting to improve the experienced paddler as much as taking time with the beginner. His clear desire to make the trip the best he possibly could was evident and the support crew were also incredibly helpful and went out of their way to make sure we had what we wanted or needed be it beer, mcdonalds or
Waterproof trousers!!!
The Bottom Line
I have only used Wilderness once - this was an error... I should have used them many many times already!! They are a company dedicated in making your trip the best it can be. We paddled down the River Spey in open canoes over 4 days and camped. The trip was amazing, including rapids and lots more white water, spectacular views, camp fires, hearty grub and the odd tipple at a whiskey distillery on the way down. This trip was awesome, you don't have to be a super experienced paddler as your guide will... errr guide you and teach you down the 'wetter' bits! An experience you do not want to miss... I dare you to stand up down the washing machine!

We really appreciated how quickly and last minute you were able to put our trip together (silly us for waiting so long to plan). It was fantastic, and we appreciated how you incorporated all of our input into the plan. I also thought it was a nice touch that you set up our car reservation for us - it saved me time (and possible confusion about what the best options were).
Trip Comments
We really enjoyed everything, and we definitely plan to come back to Scotland to see more. The best excursion bits we probably wouldn't have come up with on our own were the ATV outing, the Rib trip on Loch Ness, and the Mary King's Close tour.
Accommodation and Food
The accommodations were fantastic! We especially liked Inver Lodge and Glen Coe House, but really everything was pretty great. The only recommendation I might make here was that Eilean Iarmain Hotel, while in a pretty location, was a bit far from the rest of the Isle of Skye. Something more central would have worked better. We decided on our own to go to the 3 Chimneys for dinner one night and wound up staying in a little B&B in Dunvegan that night (to cut down on driving) called Kilmuir Park, and it was fantastic (in case you're looking for options to add to your lodging list). I don't mean for this to sound critical though - we really enjoyed everything!
Your Guide
Ken is fantastic, absolutely fantastic! He was friendly, knowledgeable, and concerned about making sure we had the best experience we possibly could. He took us on a great hike in Assynt that we never would have found on our own which was breathtakingly beautiful. He also told us we should feel welcome to call him for tips and advice at any point during our entire trip, which I thought was a really, really nice gesture.

Thr trip was incredibly well planned and far more than we could have hoped. Everyday was exciting and filled with more than enough activites.
Accommodation and Food
Overall, the accommodation was spectacular. The Bonham and Fonab castle were comfortable and beautiful. The Bonham was very well oriented for walks around the city. Inver lodge was one of our favorites! A wonderfully beautiful location and the staff was amazing. And Glencoe house was beyond expectation on every level.
Your Guide
Ken knows we love him!!! We only wish we had had more days planned with him! Hiking with him in Assynt was undoubtedly the highlight of the trip. We can't wait to come back for more!
The Bottom Line
Our trip exceeded all expectation. It would have taken us months to plan something like it on our own and likely we would never have done half of what we did through Wilderness Scotland. I can't really thank you all enough for what you've given us. Every moment was incredible. We've both traveled quite a bit and this trip is likely the best I've ever taken. We will most definitely be returning to Scotland and hopefully on more Wilderness Scotland trips!

The cycling was as demanding as I feared! I certainly had a sense of accomplishment when it was finished, but did worry that it was going to kill me in the process! I realise it's difficult to pitch a tour for varying levels of fitness and so this is not really a criticism - I didn't manage to get in the extent of pre-vacation training I had envisaged. And the one day we had to change our itinerary for weather reasons, resulted in (for me) a very demanding level of exertion which did lead me to question whether I was sane to have embarked on the tour. But my friends were less phased than I was, and I did make it, so everything worked out. I guess for my next Wilderness Scotland trip, I would be inquiring more closely about the relative challenge of a particular route.
Accommodation and Food
Food was generally very good.

Accomodation was fine overall but the hotel in Tarbert needs to invest in some mould-killer to treat the mildew in the bathroom! The B&B in Callanish (your brochure also spells it Callinish) was particularly good in a low-key way
Your Guide
Both Henry and Tim were excellent. Seemed to think of everything, were very well informed, and worked well as a team. Also nice guys!
The Bottom Line
In retrospect, it was a great holiday and allowed me to completely forget about work for a while!
Probably I wouldn't have attempted this trip if I had known in advance about the level of fitness required. But having said that, I appreciate being pushed a bit and always had the opportunity to opt out if things got too bad. And being with a group of friends, I never felt any pressure to do anything crazy. By the end of the week I was certainly fitter than when I started and felt more than able to keep up with the group. It probably would have been a bit easier/pleasant if I had put in a bit more training before the trip, but that's easy to say in hindsight.
As I don't live in the UK, getting to/from Inverness was a bit of a pain so I should perhaps have investigated flying direct to Stornoway - this could have eased the logistics but was perhaps only a problem for me?
Overall, it was an excellent week and I would enthusiastically recommend the trip to others (once I'd explained the exertion level!) especially if they could be sure to be guided by Tim & Henry.

This mark DOES NOT APPLY to Ardenasaig. The staff there was very good but the accommodation was less than expected and food was definitely less than expected and advertised. Putting more ingredients together does not make the food better or sophisticated. :-) It was not comparable with Torridon, Boath House or Glencoe House.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We're sorry that Ardenasaig didn't match up to the other accommodations throughout your trip, this comes as a complete surprise based on their reputation, restaurant awards they currently hold as well as previous client experiences. We worked out a non-standard trip to several places, with occasional guide services for our walking trips. Rachael was very accommodating and helpful with suggestions and changes to accommodate our schedule and interests.
In retrospect, it was difficult for us at our age to be prepared for a guided walk early in the morning after a drive to a new location. For us, it might have been better to stay 5 days at each location and have the guide meet us on the 3rd day, after we had settled in,
Trip Comments
We visited 4 different areas, the Cairngorms, Assynt, Hebrides, and Trossacks. The highlights were the Assynt and Hebrides for their uninhabited, wild beauty. We rarely return to the same locations, but we are tempted by these or similar areas in Scotland.
Accommodation and Food
The Albannach in the Assynt was superb, on a par with the best restaurants in the San Francisco area. The others were memorable and would stand out, except in relation to the Albannach.
Your Guide
Kevin, in the Cairngorms, faced an unknown couple, aged 73, and limited ability and high winds, with flexibility and knowledge.
Mike (Assynt) used his knowledge of the area to help us find memorable locations on our own that fit our energy level.
Mike in the Hebrides re-arranged his schedule to accommodate our very late arrival in Lewis (23 hr) and scheduled a beautiful walk for us on the 3rd day. He also arranged for pick-up at the end of the walk. We learned a great deal about the Hebrides from him.
Zoe, in the Trossacks, was limited in her knowledge of the area but led us on a pleasant, short hike.
The Bottom Line
The trip led us to 4 wonderful, scenic locations in Scotland and allowed us the flexibility to walk or sightsee as our energy allowed. The accommodations were wonderful, each presenting a sense of place. Food was a major, pleasant surprise at all lodgings although we expected good food at the Albannach (Michelin rated). For someone who wants to walk in Scotland but is uncertain about walking every day on a fixed schedule, I would recommend a self-guided trip such as this one very highly. By the way, the weather in mid-May was outstanding, we only used our raingear twice. And no midges, probably either a myth or arranged by Wilderness Scotland to wait till we had left.....

High point was a fabulous 5hr "walk" in Glencoe in appalling weather with Ali. It was as much an adventure as a walk only possible as Ali knew the area so well & could take us off the beaten track.
Accommodation and Food
Your Guide
Ali was quite simply superb. Not only was he guide, but companion, concierge and driver. He would be a major reason for us to repeat such a holiday. His passion for the mountains and nature were infectious as was his lovely sense of humour. He also ensured we were safe and properly attired wherever we walked.
The Bottom Line
Overall this was an excellent trip. The only low point was the "Harry Potter Express" which with hindsight we didn't need to do as we had seen all the scenery by the time we took the train on our last day. I suppose it would be something to do on the first day of a trip to see some of the scenery but probably not worth the trouble as getting out into the scenery was far more satisfying. Also the carriages on the train were rather miserable standard railway rolling stock from the 1970s. They were dirty, wet and the service on board was very basic. There was no pleasure in the journey. This is a train service which should be admired from the countryside as it passes you by and not from on board.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We're sorry your didn't enjoy the 'Harry Potter Express', you are certainly right about getting out into the scenery rather than seeing from a train but for some people this isn't possible so it's a great alternative. We'll certainly pass on your feedback to the operators of this service as I am sure they could do more to add pleasure to the trip and feedback such as yours should certainly encourage them to do so.

Wonderful trip. Itinerary, directions and recommendations/ suggestions were spot on and made it easy. Scotland is gorgeous but you knew that. Thought we'd give you a run down on our experience and our appreciation and thanks for putting together and coordinating a great trip to Scotland:

Arnold Clark: car was perfect; for self-protection on single lane roads with "Passing Places" if we come back, we'll lease a Defender 110. Only substitute would be James Bond's Aston Martin in Goldfinger...it was armed.

Fortingall Hotel: 2 nights; 4.5 overall on a scale of 5. Wonderful location, atmosphere, rooms, service, owner...all 5's; food was very good but a 4.

Fishing Ghillie on the Tay was a nice man but huge disappointment as a Ghillie and would not recommend him to future clients if it's their first time fishing with a Spey Rod. Fishing on the Tay this time of the year is very poor...2 salmon per week.

Drive through Glen Lyon was amazing! Kerrie and Kitty's day guide while we were fishing, Ronnie, was superb as was his tour!

Boat Hotel: 3 nights; 2.5 overall on a scale of 5. Rooms were just OK; a bit dated and threadbare; outdoor decks were dirty and outdoor mats needed replacing. Staff average...getting ice was an issue first evening as well as them forgetting David's dinner order (they did credit our meals that night and manager bent over backwards to make it up to us: bottle of wine for each room and comped our dinners the last night). Food was a 2.5 even though last dinner bumped up to 3.5 (second night we ate at Anderson's...4.0). Atmosphere at Boat Hotel was not all that great (first night's dinner in pub as they closed dining room; also a tour bus crowd/ overnight hotel...and staff acted that way vs. other the places we stayed)...main building past the lobby rather tattered and view of train derrick and abandoned train cars from our decks was not very nice....did not know that the Spey was below.

Our hiking guide for the Ryvoan Pass/ loch on the Rothiemurchus Estate, David, was very knowledgeable and an excellent guide...young man quite proud of his country (as were all of our guides and Ghillies save one), a 5.0.(I believe). The boxed lunches from the Mountain Cafe in Avimore were outstanding!

The fishing experience at the Tulchan Lodge on the Spey was a once-in-a-lifetime experience...from our greeting by Tina at the lodge and coffee in the kitchen, to meeting James in the fly room. Our Ghillie's were terrific: James, and of course Roddie, the lead Ghillie. The lunch in the cabin on the Spey was superb! Again, if folks are fishing this time of year in Scotland for the first time, they should be warned that they will be fishing and not catching. According to James, salmon are even few and far between these days...best times of year are May and September/ October. Tulchan Lodge was a 6.0! in every aspect...magnificent place.

The Ceilidh Place was 4.0 lunch spot; very good.

The Albannach: 3 nights; 5.0...staff, service, atmosphere, surroundings, rooms, meals were incredible (Leslie and Colin very cute and superb cooks; James and Chris were a thorough delight and anticipated our needs in advance).

Hike to beach was breathtaking; next day, our fishing guide, Stewart, was quite a character and took great care of us...all caught a fish; some bigger than others. Packed lunches were quite good.

Probably our favorite overall place and our top rated as well....another night of 5 course meals would have killed us though.

The Amhuinnsuidhe Castle: 3 nights; 4.5 overall. Absolutely awesome location and surroundings..watching salmon jump at the mouth of the river was simply spectacular as were the sunrises and the night with a full moon over the misty bay. Drawbacks were: short staffed (could use a full time bellman) so service suffered a bit; nice folks but nowhere near as attentive as at Fortingall and The Albannach, dinners were 2.5 at best, in fact a bit disappointing...lunchroom was a home run! Loved eating at same table with the other guests as met some very interesting folks.

Innes, estate manager, is a nice man...young server was very nice (young, brown hired lady who lived nearby and set up bitings, bar and served dinner each evening).

Ghillie's...the best! Ian and Ed; best fishing of the trip. The Golden Road was amazing; the lobsters at the Anchorage a 5.0; we all spent far too much at the Harris Tweed shop on the tip of Harris. Needed the Defender 110 for the ride in and out...BTW, the ferries were very cool!

As far as scenery and location, by far our favorite place! One of a kind and I believe that at one time one person owned it and Tulchan Lodge as well...food and service are a drag on overall score.

Inverlochy Castle: 2 nights; 5.0 on all factors...nice to be pampered at the end of our trip. Sea kayaking with Stuart was excellent; very nice young man and very patient...saying of the day, "No worries!"

William is a master of his profession (Wine Stewart) and pampered us...all of the staff was courteous and professional and made our stay very enjoyable...not overly attentive/ intrusive. Food was outstanding, all meals including picnic lunches...facility lived up to, even exceeded, its Relais & Chateaux affiliation.

While not my place to suggest but if they had the same atmosphere at dinner as The Amhuinnsuidhe would have been much better than luxury facility, formal atmosphere (a bit stuffy perhaps) but then it would not be the Inverlochy either right?

Waldorf Astoria: 3.0 and a disappointment and my bad. Initial service from front desk and the concierge, Alistar, was very strong and then dropped off a cliff in the bar for cocktails and the next morning at same spot trying to get coffee to go.

Pam our airport driver, was a total delight!

Karl, we had an awesome time/ experience...each drive, hike etc. better than the one before; wonderful people; natural beauty beyond description...we would not change a thing except staying at the Boat Hotel and our ghillie on the Tay.

With appreciation and thanks, Ed, Kerrie, David and Kitty

Retrospectively, it would have been helpful to discuss the walks/hikes in more detail prior to the trip.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
We are always on the end of the phone and welcome conversations to ensure you get the best experience possible.
Trip Comments
The RIB trip to Iona and Mull, the first walk in Glencoe and the high level of luxury of Glencoe House were the highlights. The low probably was the planning and options around the walking/hiking around Loch Melfort. We had been very clear that wanted to hike the first day. Also, we were quite clear that we wanted both a morning and afternoon hike on the third day during the trip.
Accommodation and Food
Expectations and reality were not always matched. The hotel in Loch Melfort was exactly what we anticipated - family run 3 star hotel in a beautiful location. Glencoe House exceeded expectations. It was an experience in luxury and living an alternative life. Fonab Castle was definitely a disappointment as we thought we were going to stay at something resembling a castle. We referred to it as the "MoCastle" (motel/faux castle). Although we know this is a now a 5 star property, to us Americans it definitely felt 4 star at best. That being said, we had a delicious dinner and breakfast in the brasserie.

TEAM WILDERNESS RESPONSE:
I’m sorry that Fonab Castle didn’t live up to expectations. As you know, it does have a 5-star grade from the national tourism agency. Perhaps once the spa opens it will feel more 5-star. It’s worth noting that there are few ‘resort’ hotels in the Highlands which have all of the facilities you may expect in a 5-star hotel. One of the few examples of a hotel with such facilities is Gleneagles but we prefer to work with smaller hotels with a more personal touch. You also mentioned that it was a ‘faux castle’. While it obviously has the new wing, the main castle was completed in 1892 so, despite its modern interior, it is a real castle.
Your Guide
Gordon was very nice and obliging. His knowledge of Scotland, both history and geology, was significant. Understandably, one of our party was in her 70s so Gordon might have underestimated our capabilities although we had discussed this with Stevie when planning the trip. Gordon was not as prepared with hiking options around Loch Melfort as we would have liked. Also, at Glencoe House, the staff there told us that we would not need bottled water as Wilderness Scotland had provided us refillable bottles, which they had not (we understand that we were a bespoke trip so maybe bottles would not be provided).
The Bottom Line
The above is really a 3.5. I would definitely recommend Wilderness Scotland. I would, however, insist on more discussion of the hikes and hotel options. We really enjoyed the trip and have great memories.

The way the guides helped when one member hurt her knee was totally inspirational. Thanks to them and to her own grit, she made the peak along with everyone else.

Wonderful hotel - Gran Paradio in Pont , Italy and our young waiter, Alessandro, was totally brilliant. He added so much to the experience .

Stevie is a star and a delight. The guides in Italy were just amazing. Makes my heat warm just thinking about them.
The Bottom Line
The trip,of a lifetime. The esprit de corps between us all was amazing. We had such a great group and such brilliant help , support and leadership. Robbie, our guide was a complete genius at a very difficult point on the final ascent when we felt we couldn't go any further. Not quite sure how he did it because he was so low key?He is a magician.

I think you should put a thermos flask on the kit list! It might also be worth underlining quite how cold it can be in the Cairngorms in winter.
Trip Comments
Low point: having to pay for a ski pass at Cairngorm Mountain - I think the cost of that should be included in the trip price.
High point: getting to the top of a munro on skis - it's very satisfying to set specific objectives & achieve them.
Accommodation and Food
Packed lunches weren't very suitable for being out in the hills in winter conditions (eg bags of crisps & fruit that has to be peeled are tricky with gloves on; not sure the calorie content was high enough for a full day). Although I like Newtonmore, I wasn't sure the location was ideal as it's a fair drive from both Cairngorm Mountain and Drumochter. Also, I feel "family-run B&B" would be a more accurate description than "4-star hotel". On the positive side, Dougie was friendly & accommodating of a big group of men with large amounts of wet kit!
Your Guide
Brian is a really excellent guide - very knowledgeable, calm, patient, modest, & pragmatic. I very much appreciated his focus on what we were looking to get out of the trip.
The Bottom Line
A good mix of learning new skills and putting them into practice.

Since this was not booked by me but by hit Scotland, I didn't have any information to go by other than meeting time and place, and hit didn't seem to have much more either. I didn't mind too much I enjoyed the days! The equipment list was great but it arrived a little late, 3 weeks after our briefing and only one week before our trip. It was very good and detailed though!

I felt safe and welcomed and the guides were really great!

Loved my two days. The skills training was in depth but didn't drag on. The tough weather conditions made the day challenging but I never felt unsafe. Can't wait for ny next trip!
