Welcome & Walking Tour of Glasgow

Meet your guide at Glasgow Central Station and after you have been relieved of your luggage, head out for a delicious lunch at a nearby cafe. Over lunch, your guide will chat through your upcoming adventure and answer any questions you may have. Afterwards, enjoy a fascinating walking tour of the city, discovering how its turbulent history has shaped Glasgow into the vibrant and incredibly culturally rich place it is today. This evening, relax in your lovely hotel, a beautifully restored Georgian townhouse in the heart of the city.

      Day 2

      Milngavie to Glengoyne Distillery

After breakfast, transfer to Milngavie to walk the first section of the West Highland Way. The iconic route begins in the centre of the town, marked by a stone obelisk. The trail soon leaves the urban behind and enters open countryside, passing some standing stones from the Stone Age. Finish your walk at Glengoyne Distillery and head inside for a tour and a tasting. The Glengoyne spirit is distilled more slowly than any other malt whisky, so take your time and relax. After your tour, transfer to a baronial mansion on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

      Day 3

      Conic Hill & Boat Trips

Today, head out for a short but rewarding hill walk bookended by boat trips across the glassy waters of Loch Lomond. From the charming village of Luss, catch a waterbus to Balmaha, where the sharp little summit of Conic Hill – today’s destination – can be seen. Marked by the thistle symbols of the West Highland Way, follow a well-made path that swings between two hills and ascends gradually. The views from the summit are breathtaking, offering an excellent perspective across several small wooded islands strung out along the Highland Boundary Fault. After descending, catch the boat back to Luss and explore the charming village before returning to your hotel.

      Day 4

The Wild Shores of Loch Lomond

Catch a small boat to the wilder eastern shores of Loch Lomond this morning to walk a wonderful section of the West Highland Way. Your route winds through an RSPB Nature Reserve home to an important fragment of rare Atlantic oak woodland, passing the infamous outlaw Rob Roy’s Cave, a small sandy beach, and Doune Bothy – a Mountain Bothy Association shelter. Further along the trail, the mountains of the north come into view as the path descends gradually through native woodland. Finish your walk with a drink at a nearby inn before transferring north to Glencoe and your lochside hotel.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
      Walk Details: 7 km / 4 miles | 240 m / 787 ft

Day 5 – The Devil’s Staircase Read Less

      Day 5

      The Devil’s Staircase

Head out this morning to hike what is perhaps one of the most dramatic sections of the West Highland Way. Pass the formidable slopes of Buachaille Etive Mòr (one of the best-known of all the Munro peaks) and follow an old military road to climb the Devil’s Staircase. Despite its rather foreboding name, the path is well-built, and its zig-zagging nature makes ascending easier. Two cairns mark the summit, from which fantastic views of the rugged Glencoe mountains are revealed. Slowly descend into the valley, the vast Ben Nevis mountain as your backdrop. Arrive in Kinlochleven (the first settlement in the world where every house received electricity) and return to your hotel for a well-earned dinner.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
      Walk Details: 10 km / 6 miles | Approx: 20 hrs

Day 6 – Glencoe and a Local Storyteller Read Less

      Day 6

      Glencoe and a Local Storyteller

Today, discover the soaring buttresses and glistening rock of Glencoe. Begin by visiting the thoughtful and eco-friendly visitor centre, which tells the story of the glen’s harrowing history and celebrates the area’s incredible mountain rescue team. Afterwards, join your guide to hike through the wild landscape and experience the glen’s magic firsthand. Upon returning from your walk, venture inside a traditional climbers’ pub to meet a captivating local storyteller, wiling away the afternoon with local beer, hot tea, and Scottish folk tales.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
      Walk Details: 5 km / 3 miles | 190 m / 623 ft | Approx: 2.5 hrs

Day 7 – Glen Nevis and Glenfinnan Monument Read Less

      Day 7

      Glen Nevis and Glenfinnan Monument

After breakfast, join a local ranger for arguably one of the best short walks in Scotland. Beneath the looming bulk of Ben Nevis, follow a well-trodden, albeit quite rocky path, through the beautiful Glen Nevis to arrive at the dramatic Steall Falls. Weave your way through deciduous woodland and out into the open, where the forest falls away to reveal precipitous mountains and the Munro of An Gearanach arching skywards. After admiring the waterfall, return the same way and head north towards your country house hotel. Along the way, visit Glenfinnan Monument. Take turns climbing the monument’s tower, where the Jacobite Rising began in 1745 and soak up the amazing views of Loch Shiel.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
      Walk Details: 4 km / 2 miles | 220 m / 722 ft | Approx: 2 hrs

Day 8 – Exploring the West Coast Read Less

      Day 8

      Exploring the West Coast

This morning head towards the sea for a lovely, short walk that ribbons its way along the coast to a secluded, sandy beach. Chat to your guide about the particular flora of the area, noticing the short-cropped grassy machair and looking out for wildflowers such as red clover, bird’s-foot-trefoil, yarrow, and daisies. After your walk, continue to the pretty village of Arisaig for lunch, and this afternoon, explore Camusdarach Beach, a location made famous by its starring role in the cult film Local Hero. The sand here is impossibly white and soft, and the views of the Small Isles are particularly lovely. This evening, return to your hotel with time to relax before dinner.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
      Walk Details: 9 km / 5 miles | 100 m / 328 ft | Approx: 3 hrs

Day 9 – Loch Morar and Tarbet Read Less

      Day 9

      Loch Morar and Tarbet

Today, enjoy a stunning point-to-point coastal walk which weaves along the shores of Loch Morar and traverses a low pass to arrive at the tiny hamlet of Tarbet. Accompanied by your guide, follow an ancient route that once linked several settlements, passing the restored remains of the Chapel of Inverbeg and the ruins of Brinacory. This hike is remote and especially memorable, as it threads together fragments of the past, folklore (ask your guide about Nessie’s cousin) and spectacular wild views – a fitting finish to your adventure in Scotland. Return from Tarbet on the ferry, and travel back to your hotel for a celebratory final dinner reminiscing on your trip.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
      Walk Details: 9 km / 6 miles | 130 m / 427 ft | Approx: 4 hrs

      in your own words

Wilderness Scotland is a brilliant company. When I spoke to the office in advance of the trip they were very helpful. I had an absolutely wonderful time kayaking in the seas around Arisaig, wild camping on beautiful islands and spotting seals, otters and even a dolphin. The guides were incredibly friendly and supportive, the food was excellent, the other people were really nice and the whole experience was a deeply refreshing and fun holiday which gave me a whole new perspective. Thank you! :)
