    Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 - Over the Sea to Skye

Your journey starts by heading west toward Scotland’s most famous island. As you travel through the Highlands enjoy incredible scenery and pass famous landmarks. You could visit the iconic Eilean Donan Castle which is situated on a private island at the confluence of three sea lochs and is certainly one of the most picturesque castles in Scotland. After crossing the Skye Bridge you’ll make your way to your accommodation, arriving in time to settle in and relax before dinner.

Day 2 - Guided Hiking - The Clearance Villages

Today you’ll meet your Wilderness Scotland guide and head out to explore Skye’s breathtaking scenery. The hikes will be individually tailored, taking into account your experience, interests and the weather! One poignant option is a coastal circuit that passes through the ruins of two crofting villages which were abandoned during the Highland Clearances. Your guide will share the stories of the area and help you picture what life was like for the crofters who lived and worked on this land. Whatever option you choose, keep an eye out for wildlife. Skye is home to Scotland’s largest population of white-tailed sea eagles. (B)

Day 3 - Guided Hiking - Loch Coruisk and the Black Cuillin

With a sharp amphitheatre of summits rising straight from the shoreline above mysterious deep grey waters, Loch Coruisk deserves its reputation as Scotland’s most dramatic loch. You’ll meet your guide today at a tiny harbour before crossing Loch Scavaig to the remote southern edge of the Cuillin. There is a good chance to spot wildlife, including porpoises and dolphins as well as the seal colonies that occupy the skerries at the mouth of the loch. Once dropped off in this lonely and wild spot, you can choose to circumnavigate the Loch navigating through the erratic boulders left behind by glaciers or, for a more challenging option, hike up a nearby peak for some of the most incredible views on Skye. (B)

Day 4 - Free Day to Explore

A free day for you to explore at your own pace. The Quiraing is one of Skye’s most fascinating landscapes. There are several walking routes which bear testament to the island’s unique geology or visit one of the other natural features for which Skye is so rightly famous, including the Old Man of Storr and the very popular Fairy Pools. Or head to the north-west of the island and visit the impressive Dunvegan Castle and gardens. (B)

Day 5 - Exploring Portree and Departure

After a relaxing breakfast, spend time this morning exploring Portree. The largest town on Skye, it boasts quirky wee shops and galleries as well as a busy colourful harbour. After lunch, head for home or extend your trip by adding one or more of the additional activities on offer. You may also want to link this trip with one of our other Self-Drive Collection itineraries for a longer adventure. (B)

    Optional Extra - Guided Hiking

Continue to explore the spectacular Isle of Skye on foot and in the company of a UK qualified expert hiking guide. Heading into the hills or exploring the coast and glens, the day will be tailored just for you.

    Optional Extra - Fly Fishing

Enjoy a day with a local Ghillie fly fishing for trout or salmon. Heading to the best local spots you can choose to fish a Highland spate river or a remote loch depending on the time of year and what you would like to catch.

    Optional Extra - Photography Guiding

Head out with a qualified photographic guide for the day in search of the perfect shot with emphasis on seeking out the best locations across the island and helpful instruction. Skye is a photographer’s dream offering varied and dramatic landscapes.

The first 2 hours driving north from Edinburgh was interesting but tense hugging the left side. Mental adjustments were made and the rest of our travels were just interesting. The good news is no damage to the rental car.

    The Bottom Line

My friends and I had a remarkable and memorable time with Wilderness Scotland. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and organized - the treks both days were diverse and just the right balance of challenging & relaxing moments. Skye is a beautiful place and having the guides plan and coordinate the trip really took the stress out of our planning and enabled us to just take in the sights.
