    Mini Bio

I’ve been adventuring and instructing in the outdoors for all of my adult life and am now enjoying working as a freelance instructor and guide. Most of my time has been spent on the West Coast of Scotland but I also enjoy travelling to new places. As a result I’ve been lucky enough to walk and guide all over.

    Favourite Place to Play

Anywhere with mountains and sea but I will always return to the west coast of Scotland.

Not a lot of People Know This

I used to compete in Marathon Kayak racing in Scotland and competed in the 10K demonstration event at the Commonwealth Games in 1986, finishing last!

I started my outdoors adventures with the Scouts, eventually becoming a Scout Leader. I also volunteered at the Scout’s Adventure Centre at Lochgoilhead and was responsible for kayaking activities and staff training. With my wife I volunteered with Ocean Youth Club taking young people to sea on a 72 foot Ketch for personal development. I volunteered with my local Duke of Edinburgh’s group and held the post of Expedition Supervisor.

Following retirement from Local Government I have undertaken paid freelance work in the outdoor industry. I have combined assessing Duke of Edinburgh expeditions with taking charity fundraisers up Ben Nevis, working for Torridon Outdoors and providing safety cover for MTB races and swim events.

What Fellow Travellers Say About Ramsay

Very knowledgeable about the area and technical hiking tips. They were also easy to connect with and made the group experience very enjoyable and a lot of fun.

See my earlier comments. Ramsay and James were the best.

Some of the trails had not yet been hiked by our guide, but all went well in spite of a few delays/wrong turns. Due to timing on one hike, we were unable to attempt to summit, which was somewhat disappointing, but it only happened once.

Ramsay did a great job. Clearly a competent outdoorsman who knows western Scotland. I felt safe and that he took into consideration the varying abilities of our group members. There were some times we were off track because of unfamiliarity with the driving or hiking route, but he always found the way. He was easy to be around and made the trip a pleasure.

Dude was amazing, but ya'll need to let him to go the places first, this was his first time and it was confusing.
