Visit Scotland in Spring

Spring in Scotland is a time of renewal, life and colour. As the days grow brighter, spring days slowly lengthen and the first wildflowers begin to bloom.

As with most months, rain is never far away, and snow can linger at higher altitudes, so layers and flexible planning are your allies. Many of Scotland’s iconic flowers appear in April and May, such as soft clouds of blackthorn blossoms, colourful daffodils or unassuming petals of primroses.

This is a quieter season — as the winter cobwebs dispel, Scotland slowly awakens.

Visit Scotland in Summer

Summer is the warmest and busiest season of the year. Scotland might not have scorching temperatures, but we are drenched in sunlight, with daylight hours stretching from early morning to late into the evening.

Average daytime highs hover around 17 °C/62°F, with lows averaging 10°C/50°F. Summer can be busier with more tourists, but you’ll also get to experience more festivals, events and summer activities.

Even in summer, the weather can be variable, so layers are advisable. Midges can be a challenge (especially in damp regions), but the good news is that you can easily prepare for them (view our guide here).

Visit Scotland in Autumn

Autumn offers a quieter, moodier and more reflective Scotland. The changing foliage of reds, golds and russets brings Scotland’s landscapes to life. Scotland’s ancient woodlands reverbate with the calls of deer during the annual rut, tree branches rustle with red squirrels, and the skies fill with migrating birds.

Temperatures begin to drop — daytime highs dip down toward the 8-15°C/46-59°F range. Rain and wind pick up, contributing to Scotland’s iconic moody landscapes. Towards the end of autumn, some remote services begin shutting down in preparation for winter. But the trade-off is a stunningly atmospheric experience, exceptional flora and fauna, and fewer crowds.

Visit Scotland in Winter

Winter in Scotland is quiet, atmospheric and snowy. Expect colder temperatures (especially at altitude), more wind and stormy weather. In the Highlands, the landscapes are dusted in snow, transforming the world into a magical winter wonderland.

Lowland areas tend to have cooler daytime highs, averaging 6°C/43°F, with mountain regions even colder.

Light is limited, but for those who do venture outdoors in winter, you’ll be rewarded with crisp air, frost-dusted trees, carpets of snow, and a tranquil, contemplative Scotland.
