What To Expect From Our Introduction to Sea Kayaking Holiday

    Author: Emy MacLeod
    More by Emy

    Magic Moments

One of the core activities that Wilderness Scotland offers is Sea Kayaking.  To journey in open water, explore skerries, and see marine life close up. Seals, dolphins, whales, sea eagles and, if you are really lucky, orca. Paddle past historic sites, and ruined castles, and even discover ancient Viking graves. Hear the legends, myths, and folklore that create the magic of Scotland from knowledgeable and experienced guides.

    Our Sea Kayaking Introduction Course

The Introduction to Sea Kayaking trip is a five day course that takes you from having little or no experience to being able to confidently paddle a sea kayak in a variety of conditions. This is done at some of the best locations for kayaking on the West Coast of Scotland; Sheildaig, Applecross, and Torridon. This is a fantastic way to develop your paddling skills with the added comfort of great restaurants serving up local Scottish delicacies and a cosy bunkhouse at the end of each day.

    What Can I Expect?

Read on for a detailed day-to-day account of what you can expect if you join us for the week. We hope to answer some of the questions you may have. Please remember that this is an example of what one of our trips could be like; all paddling trips are dependent on a number of factors, from the weather to your guides. Your Wilderness guides may have to choose other locations than those mentioned in this blog or on the trip itinerary. This decision will be explained and discussed with you so you understand why a site is unsuitable – whether tidal, wind, or skill reasoning. There are many fantastic locations to paddle within the Torridon and Applecross area to explore, so you won’t be left disappointed.

Day One, Getting on the Water

To start, you will travel to the west Highland village of Torridon. Today is about getting yourself fitted comfortably into your sea kayak. There will be a significant amount of time talking through the craft, the equipment, and the clothing for being on the water. It is vital that this happens so you are relaxed and have an understanding to take forward and develop over the next few days. Your Wilderness guide will work with you to get you fitted into your kayak, and that will be the boat you use for the trip (they are all numbered for ease) – this reduces the time in having to fit you to a boat each day and leaves more time for paddling.

    Getting on the Water

The first day is about getting a feel for the sea kayak on the water. Usually this is done on Loch Torridon, which is very close to our accommodation. The introduction of forward paddling and turning is touched on as you take a short paddle to explore the bay and shoreline. The aim for day one is to eliminate any anxiety or fears you may have for the trip, be issued with equipment for the week, be fitted to your sea kayak, and have a feel for paddling on the water in a very safe and relaxed environment!

Dinner tonight is at the bunkhouse and prepared for you by your two guides, although guests are welcome to help out. We may take a short walk to the village or down to the loch shore to watch the sunset, an excellent way to end the first day of your trip.

    Day Two, Developing Your Skills

    Sea Kayaking on Loch Torridon

Loch Torridon is a sea loch approx 25 km/15 miles in length. On day two of your Sea Kayaking Introduction Course, you will explore part of this loch. A there-and-back-again trip may be the itinerary, or a longer paddle where your guides have to shuttle the trailer and vehicle may be the option. To ensure you are comfortable, you will reconfirm what you learned yesterday and sort out any tweaks to your foot peg positions or backrests. The main objective is to focus on learning to keep your sea kayak in a straight line whilst paddling, and skills sessions on manoeuvring the boats. All this is done whilst exploring the loch so keep your eyes peeled for seals and porpoises and to the sky for eagles!

The course is not only to develop your paddling skills but also to enhance your independent paddling knowledge. There will be time to get our maps and sea charts to look at tidal flows, how the tide affects paddling, and how to plan for your paddle – all of which will help you be involved in where you go for the next few days. Tonight, you and your group will visit one of the local restaurants in the area, a firm favourite is Gille Brighde, in Diabeg.

Day Three, Putting Skills Into Practise

A longer drive takes you to the village of Applecross, thought to be one of the earliest settlements in Scotland. Its Gaelic translation, meaning ‘The Sanctuary’, refers to a monastery said to have been established there in 675 CE. We may also go further around the peninsula to paddle on Loch Kishorn, a tranquil sea loch surrounded by rugged hills. The waters here are calm, offering ideal conditions for paddlers looking to explore at a relaxed pace, while still surrounded by the stunning backdrop of the Applecross Mountains. Another option is to visit the lovely Highland village of Plockton, often referred to as ‘the Jewel of the Highlands’. We will embark from the picturesque bay to visit the nearby Eilean a’Chait Lighthouse.

    A Longer Paddle

Either way, this day gives an excellent opportunity to paddle longer distances. All options are incredibly picturesque and provide an opportunity to consolidate skills learned in a new environment. Pick a journey around the shoreline, visit skerries, pull up on rocky beaches, watch seals bathe on the rocks, and enjoy being out on the water.

We may return to our bunkhouse before dinner, or eat somewhere on the way back.

    Day Four, Planning a Journey

Shieldaig is one of the favourite places to paddle. It is an idyllic fishing village a short drive from our accommodation and home to a nesting pair of white-tailed sea eagles that can be seen flying overhead.

There are a few options for the paddle around Shieldaig. Whichever you plan, you have a high chance of spotting seals and porpoises. And a paddle up the northern coast will take you close to film locations for Loch Ness and King Arthur. With calmer waters, you can cross the open water to the southern coast, where you may spot otters on the shore, where a running stream of fresh water meets salt water.

    Skill Development

For those wanting to push their skills, looking at introducing ‘edge’ to your paddling toolbox and paddling speed are all valuable in developing your skills to be more efficient and effective. The final evening is spent in Shieldaig, eating out at the local restaurant with an array of seafood dishes, and many other options for vegan, gluten-free, and meat eaters too.

    Day Five, The Final Paddle

On the final day of your Introduction to Sea Kayaking holiday, there is time for a morning paddle to end your course. This is usually at a nearby location or can be one on the way back towards Inverness. Although not a sea paddle, Loch Maree is a stunning loch that has you paddling amongst an archipelago of 40+ islands. It is home to breeding black-throated divers and the sacred island, Isle Maree. This is the final resting place of a Viking chief, an important site in druid times, and where wishes are granted, or curses are cast, with the sacred Money Tree. There is limited, if any, coaching on this final paddle – it is a morning to enjoy being on the water, exploring by boat, and getting a perspective from the water that few will share.

    Goodbye

Once off the water, your guides will drive your group back to Inverness for a final goodbye and onward departure. You may be left wondering what is next. Your guides can recommend future paddling, other trips, and accessible places that can be explored by sea kayak.

    Women Only Departures

Wilderness Scotland offers several women only departures on a variety of scheduled trips, including our Sea Kayaking Introduction Course. These trips have been designed to encourage more women to build confidence and develop skills in adventure activities that have previously been considered male-dominated.

“A break away from the everyday routine that I will always remember – especially for the company of the group and the resulting shared experience. I haven’t laughed so much for ages.” – Jane Carwithen, 12/05/2023

    Women in Adventure

“The guides were exceptional, I felt totally safe and encouraged. I was with a wonderful bunch – very funny and supportive.” – Ann Pamment, 08/09/2021

When guiding a women only trip, it is clear that it is not about the absence of males but more about being in a relaxed environment without competition or feeling elements of pressure. The pressure we as individuals put on ourselves internally can directly affect the levels of stress we have.  Being in a relaxed environment with like-minded women breaks down barriers, opens the mind, and allows a sense of calmness. The feeling of enrichment and enjoyment are dominant on women-focused trips, generally involving lots of laughter, forming strong friendships and having a greater sense of freedom.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the accommodation like? Read More

The accommodation is private bunkhouse in the village of Torridon. It has a comfortable communal living and kitchen space where you will make breakfast and prepare your lunches. The bunkhouse has two four bunk bed dorms and one two bunk bed dorm – sleeping 10 in total. There are two shower rooms with hot water, and a drying room to hang up all your paddling kit after a day on the water. On colder nights, you can light up the wood-burning stove or, if the weather is fair, take a walk down to the loch side to watch the sunset.

How fit do I need to be for sea kayaking? Read More

A certain level of fitness is required for the trip, but there is no need to have been in a sea kayak or paddling before coming on the trip. Regular walking or cycling is recommended, as is sitting on the floor in a kayak seat-like position a few times a week in the evening. This exercise can get you used to having an upright position and a frog-like leg position! You will carry the kayaks daily over uneven ground so perhaps carrying the groceries around the house or garden in equally weighted shopping bags can help you prepare.

What clothing is best for paddling? Read More

Wilderness Scotland provides a paddling jacket/paddling cag as part of your equipment. Read our blog on What to Wear Sea Kayaking for more information.

At the end of the day, you want to be in comfortable clothing and footwear that is sturdy and rigid soles for you to walk over rocks and seaweed.
