May is Whisky Month
All things whisky are being celebrated this month so we thought we’d take you on a wee tour of some interesting ways you can combine your love for a malt with an active holiday.
Work up a thirst with open canoeing on the River Spey or island hopping across Arran and Jura on your bike; no matter how you decide to do it our guides will help you enjoy Scotland’s water of life from a new angle. But where to start? We’re going to begin with the much celebrated region of Speyside.
Dotted along the banks of the River Spey are distilleries (84 in total) that any whisky connoisseur will recognise. Perhaps you’d like to meander down the 65 miles of the Speyside Way on foot stopping off wherever you fancy for a dram? Maybe you’d rather grab an open canoe and paddle along the beating heart of Scotland’s most celebrated whisky region? Local water sources are the key to a whisky’s character and so it’s no wonder its also known as uisge beatha or the water of life.

The islands (excluding Islay) are deemed to be part of the Highlands whisky region but in reality the islands offer an eclectic contribution to Scotch whisky. Explore the islands by bike and see if you can discern a slightly saltier taste in the Jura whisky as opposed to the fruity sweetness of barley found in Arran, and Islay…well we’ll get to that in a moment. Perhaps you fancy combing the beach for a 70 year old bottle of whisky on the Isle of Eriskay ? Rumour has it the island still holds a cache of illicit whisky made famous by the film Whisky Galore.
Islay is a must do for any discerning whisky drinker – the isle is famous for its peaty smoky drams. Take a tour on two wheels so you can whizz between the many distilleries and get a real feel for why it is known as the Whisky Isle. If you prefer to savour your whisky then try a slower pace with this Argyll & the Isles walking tour.

Embrace the freedom of the open road with the North Coast 500: a bucket-list-worthy road-trip. It’s a truly spectacular drive but if you want to explore the wild coastlines and majestic peaks of the northern Highlands properly you really must strap your hiking boots on with one of our amazing guides. On the return to Inverness you can stop off at the distilleries dotted along the eastern fringes of the route and toast the North Coast 500. You’ll be in good company – Conde Naste even offers it up as a contender for the best road-trip in the world.
The Scottish Lowlands is the last destination on our 5 countries bike tour of the UK and Ireland – launched to celebrate the bicentennial of the bike. From Ireland we arrive on Scottish soil and pedal amongst lovely rural farmland towards Wigtown. Nearby is Scotland’s most southerly distillery Bladnoch which has just come back into production and it celebrating its own bicentennial.
