    Solo Travel in Scotland

Travelling solo doesn’t mean going it alone – on a Wilderness trip, it means joining a group of like-minded people who share your passion for exploring Scotland.

We welcome solo travellers on all our small-group adventures – in fact, many of our guests choose to travel solo. Whether you’re looking to explore Scotland’s beautiful landscapes, connect with others who share your love of the outdoors, or simply enjoy a break from the everyday, our trips offer the freedom and support to do it all on your own terms.

Scotland is the perfect solo travel destination. Its wild landscapes, rich heritage and welcoming culture create the ideal setting for both personal adventure and shared discovery. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be part of a friendly group of travellers, with an experienced guide leading the way. With all the logistics already taken care of and an expert host at the helm, you’re free to fully relax and take it all in.

Whether you’re a seasoned solo adventurer or considering your first independent trip, our guided tours offer a supportive and enjoyable way to explore. With accommodation, transport and memorable experiences all carefully curated, we make solo travel easy, rewarding, and wonderfully stress-free.

Going Solo on a Group Trip — Is It for Me?

Solo travel is for anyone who wants to explore freely and fully, on their own terms. It’s for those with an adventurous spirit, eager to discover Scotland’s stunning landscapes, rich culture, and fascinating history — whether that means a week of visiting incredible historical sites, from Culloden Battlefield to the mysterious ancient brochs, or hiking in the Cairngorm mountains.

It’s also ideal for people who enjoy the balance of travelling alone and group companionship: perhaps you prefer different activities from your usual travel companions, find it tricky to coordinate dates with friends, or simply enjoy the pleasure of travelling independently. With us, you can join a friendly group of like-minded explorers, enjoying both the freedom to go your own way and the camaraderie that comes from shared experiences.

From your first questions to handling all the logistics, we’re here to support you throughout your journey. And because our tours operate in small groups, you’ll always have company without losing the joy of solo adventure. Reach out to our sales team to discover the perfect solo trip for you.

    Best Tours for Solo Travel

Truthfully, nearly all of our trips suit solo adventurers. That said, some itineraries tend to resonate particularly well with those travelling independently.

For solo walking holidays, our point-to-point hikes—like the iconic West Highland Way—offer an unbeatable mix of challenge, support, and scenery. Enjoy the company of a small group, the freedom to walk at your own pace, and the peace of mind that comes from travelling with expert guides who take care of logistics, meals, transfers, and route planning.

Looking for a more remote escape? Try an island-hopping journey to the Outer Hebrides, Orkney, or Staffa, where wonderful wildlife, Celtic history, and dramatic coastlines await – all without the hassle of planning ferries or accommodation.

Solo cycling tours are another fantastic option. Whether you’re tackling the Grand Tour of Scotland or riding the quiet roads of the Hebrides, a group cycling trip lets you enjoy the open road without worrying about luggage transfers or where the best spot is for a picnic. Simply turn up, clip in and get rolling alongside a great gang and expert cycling guide.

Each of our tour categories offers inspiring options for solo travellers. Simply choose your preferred style of adventure to find the trip that suits you best.

    Solo Travel FAQs

I’m a solo traveller, is there a single supplement? Read More

No problem at all. There is no supplement for solo travellers as long as you are happy to share a room with someone of the same gender. If you’d prefer to have your own room there will be a charge.

What do the room types mean? Read More

Single – A room for one person, available for an additional supplement and usually allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Double – A room for two people with one bed.

Twin – A room for two people with two separate beds.

Can I book a single room? Read More

Single rooms are offered on most of our trips but these are limited so are allocated on a first come first served basis. It’s no problem to book a single room as long as there is one available. Most single rooms do incur a single supplement, which you can find in the trip dossier.

Will, there be other solo travellers in the group? Read More

It’s impossible to know in advance what the make-up of a particular trip will be but the majority of people that join our trips are solo travellers. This means that for the most part, you will have at least a few solo travellers on each trip. If you have questions about who you will be travelling with then give us a call and we can give you a quick overview.

I’m a solo traveller can I book on a self-guided or self-drive trip? Read More

Unfortunately not. For safety reasons, we don’t offer self-guided trips for solo travellers. We have lots of solo-travellers on our small group trips though and you’d be more than welcome you join one of those.

Can I Join a Solo Holiday Last Minute? Read More

Everyone’s definition of “last minute” varies slightly, but we do offer places on selected trips close to departure. Solo travellers are often well suited to last-minute bookings—especially on lodge-based tours like our retreats, where rooms are available right up until the trip departs.

If you’re considering a last-minute solo holiday, we recommend contacting our friendly team to check availability. If there’s space on the trip, you’ll likely share a room with another traveller of the same gender, though single rooms may still be available on some departures.
