What Makes Our Bike Tours Special

Wilderness Scotland cycling holidays are a rich way to explore the country’s scenery, landscape, culture, and history.

The majority of our bike tours are point-to-point, meaning that you can challenge yourself with getting from A to B by pedalling each mile as part of a friendly group.

    We’ll Sweat the Details

All our trips are led by a qualified and experienced guide but you also receive detailed route notes for each day’s ride. You can choose to cycle Scotland with your guide or simply follow the route notes, meeting up with the group at designated stops along the way.

Throughout the day, our support vehicle will always be close to hand to provide drinks, snacks and a friendly ride should you need it. It also transfers your luggage between hotels, gearing you up for a lightweight and carefree ride.

One of the most rewarding aspects of our cycling holidays is the places we choose for dinner each night. We package everything so you don’t need to worry about the details, except, of course, what you order from the menu. We’ve selected independent hotels and fantastic eateries, so you’ll be well-fuelled for the next day in the bike saddle.

    Trip Planning and Customer Support

We deliver expertly crafted cycling trips in the most beautiful regions of Scotland. Handling far more than just the logistics, we organise your cycling adventure in its entirety, so you don’t need to worry about a thing. Joined by a knowledgeable and enthusiastic cycling guide, enjoy the freedom of exploring on two wheels without worrying about directions, meals, snack stops, mechanicals or accommodation.

Our expert teams know our historic and diverse landscapes better than anyone, so we deliver an incredible range of world-class cycling trips to suit every ability. If you’re looking for a little extra boost, you can hire an e-bike for any of our road-cycling holidays or choose a dedicated e-bike itinerary. Crafted by our expert team of trip designers, our cycling trips are built on a foundation of deep personal experience and enhanced and delivered by our passionate guides. Whether you’re a first-time visitor to our heathery hills or a returning traveller, we would be delighted to welcome you to Scotland and into the saddle.

    Bring Your Own Bike

You are also more than welcome to bring your own bike. If you’re bringing your E-bike along for the trip, please ensure it has a removable battery. Due to limitations around charging, E-bikes with non-removable batteries cannot be accommodated.

If you choose to do so, please ensure it’s in excellent working condition and has been recently serviced – either by you or by a reputable bike shop.

In addition, please bring the following:

    • Multi-tool, including a chain tool
    • Mini pump and/or CO2 canisters
    • Two spare tubes and a puncture repair kit

Because we will need to load your bike onto one of our trailers, please ensure that:

    • Your rear wheel is clear of any obstructions; including lights, mudguard or panniers
    • Your tyres are no wider than 45mm

Due to the nature of our trips, we are unfortunately unable to carry bike boxes or bags with us, so please make prior arrangements if necessary.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our friendly and knowledgeable sales team are always delighted to answer any queries you may have.

Ok, I’m All Booked But What Do I Pack? Read More

For any traveller considering booking a cycling holiday with us, we will provide a detailed kit list, which you can find here. The list includes all the essential items we recommend packing for your cycling tour (such as gloves, a lightweight waterproof jacket and bike shoes) as well as our recommended items. You will need a small day sack for water, snacks, extra layers and any other creature comforts. Your primary luggage will either remain at the accommodation or be transported via the support vehicle between hotels, gearing you up for a lightweight and carefree ride. Ideally, if you can pack using a soft duffle bag, it makes life easier packing up our vans. We are always happy to offer additional advice, so do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries.

Scottish weather is often lovely – clear and cold in the winter, cool and windy in the autumn, fresh and bright in the spring, and warm and settled in the summer. However, you may have heard that we do sometimes get all the seasons in one day, so it’s best to be prepared. As Alfred Wainwright said, ‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.’

    Sustainability and Responsible Travel

If our reviews are anything to go by, the way we operate our holidays proves that it is possible to travel responsibly without compromising the traveller’s experience. All our cycling itineraries are designed to minimise our carbon footprint, support local communities, and protect the wild landscapes we cherish, preserving them for all those who follow.

What Do We Mean By Responsible Travel?

Travel allows us to visit beautiful, wild places and connect with different cultures around the world. As travellers, we can travel more sustainably by making well-informed choices. We accept that flying to a destination may be the best available option, but once we’re there, we think about staying longer, choosing back-to-back tours, and making our journeys count once we arrive. By choosing Wilderness Scotland, Wilderness Ireland or Wilderness England, you’re choosing a world-leading travel company fully committed to sustainable travel.

    Our Sustainability Goals

Our vision for 21st century travel is one that pushes decisively towards a more sustainable future. We have taken an industry-leading position on climate change. We are one of only a handful of companies committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the first global science-based standard with the aim of achieving true net zero.

    Iconic Sites and Hidden Gems

    Customer Experience

We specialise in cycling adventures that showcase Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes. Our passionate trip designers draw on a wealth of local experience to create adventures that combine unique routes, amazing views, historical sites, and charming accommodations. Every detail of our cycling trips has been carefully considered, meaning you can simply turn up, clip in and enjoy the ride. Our small group sizes allow for a more personalised experience, with guides able to share their in-depth knowledge of the area and its hidden gems.

On all our cycling trips, you’ll pedal through stunning, quiet landscapes, all the while knowing that your trip supports the local communities you visit. Additionally, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint and keeping as many elements of our trips as local as possible, ensuring that your adventure not only enriches your experience but also helps protect Scotland’s natural beauty for future generations. The joy of biking has never been so keenly felt than on one of our adventures through Scotland.

    Local Connections Read More

One of the greatest joys of travel is experiencing a country through the eyes of the people who call it home. The conversations you have and the connections you make with locals can turn a simple visit into many meaningful experiences. From the beginning, Wilderness has cherished our local connections, working with an incredible network of local businesses throughout Scotland. This means that on our cycling tours, you’ll see Scotland from a local’s perspective and enjoy an immersive adventure that allows you to form a more genuine connection with the landscape, communities and people you visit.

Expert and Passionate Guides Read More

Our guides are not only excellent cycling guides (poised to fix a trailside mechanical or adjust the route for the best weather) but also possess a deep knowledge of Scotyland’s rich history, culture, and wildlife. With many years of experience, they bring enthusiasm and expertise to every trip. Whether uncovering tales of ancient battles, introducing you to local delicacies, or pointing out wildlife, their passion and knowledge enrich every rotation of your journey. As well as being genuine, affable and charismatic, all our guides are professionals who prioritise the safety and wellbeing of every traveller. Their outdoor expertise, combined with their ability to bring the stories of Scotland to life, means every trip is full of camaraderie, interest and good humour.

Storytelling Brings Scotland to Life Read More

Scotland’s rich tapestry of history and culture is made vivid through the captivating storytelling and local knowledge of our guides. Whether recounting the sagas of ancient clans or sharing myths of mystical creatures that haunt both loch and glen, our guides enhance your understanding and connection to Scotland in a highly enjoyable and relaxing way.

Route Planning and Adjustments Read More

On guided bike tours, there will always be a guide on the road with you, and another in the van. On self-guided+ bike tours, there won’t be a guide on the road, but you’ll still have access to your guide in the support vehicle. Bike computers and pre-programmed maps ensure you can ride at your own pace without worrying about getting lost. Each day, your guide will go through the route with the group, pointing out must-sees, hidden gems, and scheduled stops along the way.

Our guides are also experts at reacting to and adapting plans where it may be advantageous for the group to do so. For example, should the weather change or an exciting opportunity present itself, they can easily adjust the day’s plan to ensure your experience remains seamless and enjoyable. This flexibility ensures that every day on your cycling holiday is maximised for adventure, allowing for spontaneity without compromising on the quality of the experience.

    Your Personal Concierge Read More

Our guides are outdoor experts and your Scottish hosts. Their goal is to ensure you get the absolute most out of your experience with us, which means ensuring you feel informed, relaxed, and happy for the duration of your adventure. From handling meal arrangements to managing transport and accommodation, every logistical detail is carefully coordinated so you can relax fully. Their thoughtful approach ensures that every element of your guided cycling adventure runs smoothly, allowing you to focus entirely on enjoying your trip.

    Peace of Mind Read More

With a professional guide at the helm, you have the time, space and opportunity to immerse yourself fully in any one of our guided cycling trips. From route planning to ensuring safety and comfort, your guide takes the stress out of decision-making. They know the best routes, the best wet-weather alternatives, the most beautiful viewpoints, the cosiest cafes, the perfect place for hand-spun socks and whether they serve porridge and heather honey at breakfast. Whether you’re seeking a slow adventure or an invigorating challenge, our guides provide peace of mind, allowing you to enjoy your time in Scotland as much as possible.

    Flexibility Read More

Our itineraries are designed with flexibility in mind. For those who enjoy the challenge of testing climbs and thrilling descents – we have a guide who will keep up with you every step of the way; likewise, if you would prefer to take each day at a slightly more leisurely pace, then you are free to do so by hopping in the support van. E-bikes are also a great equaliser. For example, if your partner, friend or family member would love to join a trip but is a less experienced rider, they could hire an E-bike, allowing you both to enjoy an incredible adventure together.

Small Group Size Benefits Read More

One of the defining features of our guided cycling trips is the small group size, which enhances every aspect of the journey. Small groups mean greater flexibility and the camaraderie that forms often leads to a more rewarding experience. With fewer participants, our guides can dedicate more time to each person, ensuring that everyone feels supported and able to engage deeply with the landscapes and stories shared along the way. From a safety perspective, small groups allow guides to easily monitor conditions and swiftly respond to any changes or needs. Transfers and logistics become smoother too, allowing for seamless transitions between locations. We often find that guests keep in touch with each other after a trip has finished and sometimes return the following year with the same group for another adventure!

Every client receives a feedback survey when they return from their guided, self guided or tailor made holiday with us. Once completed the review is published on our website just as soon as our database updates. The little touches and details are important to us and where issues are raised we make positive changes to our trips to improve your experience.

That’s why we read each of our client’s reviews and although we don’t respond to all of them, if it’s glowing feedback then we get the satisfaction of helping to make your holidays truly memorable.
