    Mini Bio

As a teenager, I was very interested in travel and being physically active. By seeking out experiences that met these interests I found my way into a lifestyle of outdoor adventure and expeditions. I have spent most of my working life trying to become an outdoor educator and have been privileged to hold numerous roles in the UK and internationally that provided me with this opportunity. I focus my time on sea kayaking and hiking as they are a great mix of my preferences of self-sufficiency, simplicity and situatedness.

    Favourite Place to Play

Innerleithen or Torridon for mountain biking. Anglesey or Western Scotland for sea kayaking. I really enjoy the changeable weather in Scotland, no matter what is going on the land here is always dramatic and atmospheric.

Not a lot of People Know This

Inuits would decide the width of their kayak by placing two fingers either side of their hips. This is a lot narrower than many modern designs.

The majority of my experience has been leading extended expeditions in remote locations such as traversing sections of the Rocky Mountains or sea kayaking sections of the Baja Peninsula.

    Biggest Adventure Read More

Travelling across France by train in order to begin a climbing trip in the Alps. I always thought mountain weather was dramatic and quick to change, then I experienced SNCF.

What Fellow Travellers Say About Janek

Janek did a terrific job guaging how our small group of 4 (all friends) were feeling each day. Since 3 of us were sick at various times, he even incorporated a couple of pharmacy stops to help manage symptoms. In response to most of our group feeling under the weather, he varied the itinerary to include a couple of shorter - but very rewarding - hikes. We are so fortunate he ended up guiding this trip, as his detailed, firsthand knowledge of the area was so valuable. He also did a good job of moderating the pace of hiking to the slowest/sickest members of our group, while allowing those feeling a little better to follow the obvious path to the turnaround point. We feel truly fortunate that we were paired with Janek for his one week of guiding with Wilderness Scotland this spring.

Our guides Janek and Jamie were excellent. Great company and ideal companions. Managed to knit a group of strangers together without any difficulty. The instruction and technical support was first class. Even managed to make haggis & neeps taste good! Couldn't have done more for us.

As already mentioned the guides were amazing. I really appreciated the information that they gave us each day as to why they had chosen our destination due to the weather forecast, tides etc. Very aware of individuals various needs.

Janek and Jamie were very professional but also handled everything with a light touch. Both were very knowledgeable about the local area and wildlife (although, Jamie, sea otters grow to 3 FEET not three metres :) ). Thank you both for a great experience!
