My first experience of the outdoors was camping, age 6, with my parents. Since then I have walked, cycled, and camped in many of the most beautiful wild places in Scotland. Born in Inverness, I had a career in construction based in Glasgow. My work took me all over Scotland including Shetland, Orkney, Skye, Outer Hebrides, and from Durness in the north to Stranraer in the south. I now split my time between being in the mountains and playing/teaching bridge.

Fifteen years ago, I became a leader with the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and currently work professionally with various schools and centres.

    Place to Play

The Cairngorms have been my playground since my first camping trip to Loch Morlich. All seasons, all weather, working out multi day trips linking up the beautiful glens. Glencoe, with its history and stunning scenery is also a favourite, and more recently have been working my way around the outer islands – camping on remote beaches takes some beating!

Also love Italy, so much so that I learned Italian, and have walked in the Dolomites, Tuscany, Gran Sasso, Amalfi, and Sicily.

Not a lot of people know

I used to build sailing canoes with my Dad. Our first sail was made out of a gingham picnic table cover – I don’t think my Mum ever found out where it went!

Climbed more than half the Munros in summer and winter, now exploring the history and culture of the Scottish Glens.

Trips overseas have mainly been to Italy, but also walked in Spain, Majorca, Switzerland, Bavaria and Crete.

As a leader and assessor with the Duke of Edinburgh Award I have designed, planned, and led over a hundred multi day expeditions through some of the most beautiful glens in Scotland.

It’s very rewarding taking groups into places most people would never have an opportunity to experience, e.g. Camping on a beach on remote Loch Loch (yes, there is a Loch Loch!); seeing stars you feel you could pluck out the sky when it’s so black.

I was fifteen years old when I made my first overseas trip to Kandersteg in Switzerland, with the Scouts. Two full weeks walking and climbing in the stunning Bernese Oberland. Can’t believe we climbed in the snow above 3000m with shorts, no crampons, no ice axe! Safety and regulations have changed since then.

I have the fondest and most profound memories of this trip, so much so that in 2019 I returned to the international Scout chalet in Kandersteg, revisiting some of the beautiful hills and lakes.

Enjoy reliving ‘a day in the life’ of our ancestors, from ploughman to prince, in what was a very harsh environment.

With my construction background, I love to investigate historical remains – what was built here, how did they build it, what was it for, who stayed there? We also have a legacy of ancient roads and bridges built by prolific engineers in 18th and 19th centuries such as General Wade, Major Caulfield, and Thomas Telford.

Laurence was an excellent driver. Always on time and polite. His enthusiasm for Scotland, the history and the sites we saw was very pleasant. Above all he took care to ensure that all of the members of the group did what they could while hiking. Always felt safe.

Laurence was an excellent guide, he paced all the walks well, he knew the area well, he was flexible to cope with the weather. He was also generous with his time and had a great sense of humour.

Laurence was very professional and was keen to adapt the walks to the group's abilities and to the weather. We enjoyed Laurence's anecdotes on the way and the whisky testing was a real plus! Some of us could have been challenged more by some harder, longer walks.
