      Trip Overview

      Created by: Stevie Christie

Explore some of the stunning glens and valleys of the Central Highlands at their most glorious time of year.

Taking in incredible locations such as Glen Affric and the Great Glen, we have created and timed this trip especially to seek out the most vibrant autumn colours.

This easy walking holiday lets you enjoy the dramatic Highland sights each day and enjoy a cosy fire and wonderful meals in the evenings. In the months of September, October, and November, the mixed woodlands that fringe the glens turn bold shades of amber and gold, offering superb autumnal vistas to walk through and photograph. The roar of rutting stags fills the glens while you take in magnificent views through the crisp autumn air. This is a holiday which will delight all of your senses.

Please note – The itinerary may be subject to change at the discretion of the Wilderness Scotland Guide with regard to weather conditions and other factors.

Day 1 – Hike above Loch Ness Read Less

      Day 1

      Hike above Loch Ness

After meeting in Inverness, the group will enjoy a walk on the north side of Loch Ness through a community-owned forest. An excellent trail leads uphill through the woods, with the community trust adding some interesting sights to the hike, including a reconstructed Iron Age house, a wildlife hide overlooking the loch, and a reconstructed ‘shieling’ on the moor. After reaching the summit and admiring the wide-ranging views, the descent leads to a short journey to the hotel in Fort Augustus. In the evening, everyone gathers for a welcome dinner at the hotel, savouring local flavours and toasting the adventures to come.

      Meals Included: Lunch and Dinner
      Walk Details: 9 km / 6 miles | Approx: 4 hrs

Day 2 – Laggan to Fort Augustus Read Less

      Day 2

      Laggan to Fort Augustus

Enjoy a point-to-point walk along the remote eastern shores of Loch Oich, the second of the three main lochs in the Great Glen, following a former railway line. At Bridge of Oich, you’ll join the Caledonian Canal footpath, which conveniently leads directly back to your hotel.

      Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch
      Walk Details: 15 km / 9 miles | Approx: 5 hrs

Day 3 – Glen Tarff and General Wade's Military Road Read Less

      Day 3

Glen Tarff and General Wade's Military Road

Today involves gaining some height by following General Wade’s Military Road towards the Corrieyairick Pass. The trail winds up towards the pass at 800m – but there’s no need to climb that far! Soon, a smaller trail is joined, which follows the woodland along the River Tarff. The woodland gorge is a Site of Scientific Interest and is home to several rare plants, including Wood Cranesbill and Greater Wintergreen.

      Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch
      Walk Details: 8 km / 5 miles | Approx: 5 hrs

Day 4 – Glorious Glen Affric Read Less

      Day 4

      Glorious Glen Affric

After breakfast, the day begins with discovering the ancient woodlands and solitude of Glen Affric. There are several options for stunning walks—perhaps circumnavigating Loch Affric or following a route through the ancient forest of the great wood of Caledon to explore the flora and fauna of this wonderful glen. This is an incredibly photogenic place and there will be ample time to try and capture the scene. In the evening, everyone will gather for a final night dinner at the hotel, reflecting on the adventures shared.

Walk details: various options | approx. 4-5 hours

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Its grace and charm are complemented by the natural decor and warm hospitality offered by a devoted and passionate team. All bedrooms offer home comforts and modern facilities, and combined with cosy nights by a roaring fire, this makes it the perfect base for this walking holiday.

      Grading Read More

      Green Graded 1-3

Green graded walking holidays are suitable for active travellers who are reasonably fit and enjoy moderate hikes. We walk at a comfortable pace, and you can expect to be out for 5-6 hours a day. The terrain will consist mostly of good paths and hill trails, but these can still be muddy and rough. Some hikes may involve an ascent up to approximately 1,500 feet / 450m. Distances will typically be 8-10km, but there may be an odd, slightly longer day. Daily hike details are available in the itinerary.

Travel - Arrival and Departure Read More

I loved every minute of every day. The Autumn Hike was perfectly descibed with hiking level as expected. The Rewilding Centre was amazing/ I wish I could volunteer there! I can't wait to do another trip with WS. Great care is taken to make sure your guests have the best experience possible and in my opinion, you nailed it!

Excellent. And as a bonus, no sideways rain. The decent weather moved this from “an experience” to a “terrific time”.

Wilderness Scotland provides you with an intimate lens of some of the country's most fantastic and spectacular landscapes. This land is wild, beautiful, unexpected, and truly magical. Everyone should aim to see Scotland in this way at least once in their lives—truthfully, however, I don't think you could tire from experiencing the vastness of the natural beauty that exists here time and time again.
