Wilderness Scotland recognised as one of 2018 UK’s Best Workplaces

    By Rupert Shanks, Chief Storyteller

We are delighted to announce that Wilderness Scotland has been recognised as the 8th Best Small UK Workplace in the 2018 Great Place to Work awards scheme.

This scheme is the largest workplace survey in the world and we’re over the moon to be the only travel and tourism organisation honoured this year.

The Wilderness workplace culture is a big part of life here at Wilderness Scotland. A focus on work-life balance, shared values and transparent teamwork is a core part of our business. So it’s been a fascinating and rewarding experience to learn how this approach compares to companies throughout the UK.

The Great Place to Work scheme.

Over 10,000 organisations participated in the scheme this year. The methodology used is unique with no other workplace survey assessing the opinions of employees, and combining the results with company HR and leadership practices.

Wilderness Scotland was one of 127 winners overall, and was ranked 8th out of just 24 in the Small Business category. Our report scored very highly among our team Trust index. Particular emphasis was placed on the transparency of management and team camaraderie, and 100% of employees considered Wilderness Scotland a great place to work.

    The Wilderness Culture.

Paul Easto, our co-founder and Managing Director, said, “Back in the early days of Wilderness Scotland, it’s fair to say that we didn’t give a great deal of thought to company culture. In fact, the concept of actually employing anyone seemed a distant pipe dream. Therefore to see Wilderness Scotland recognised as one of the UK’s Best Workplaces some 15 years later is incredible and testament to all the amazing work that the team has put in over the years.

Everyone at Wilderness Scotland has been responsible for creating a truly special workplace culture. It’s a place where people genuinely care about each other, where your colleagues are your friends, where everyone’s views count and where work is fun and has purpose.”

Some of our shared team benefits include:

    • Free lunchtime yoga once a week
    • Flexible working to go skiing on powder days
    • Wilderness Weeks – 1 week for each team member when they can join one of our trips for free
    • Volunteering – each team member encouraged to take time throughout the year to volunteer with local organisations
    • Pro Discounts – with our trade partners such as Haglofs
    • Birthday Cake – this is a ritual that is never missed!
