Like many others, my introduction to the outdoors was through the Scout movement. In my teens, I graduated to racing kayaks both at home and abroad. After university, I moved to Scotland and taught Outdoor Education in both schools and outdoor centres. Returning to England I ran a business designing, manufacturing and selling open canoes before becoming an academic working in education, environmental studies, sports science, and sports coaching studies.
